PROMOS: Sunday is Youth Day at La Rue Field as all kids (sixth grade and younger) get in free by wearing their jerseys to the game. Fans can then stick around for an autograph session and free mini clinic with the team following the final out.
PLAY BALL!: With final exams over and fresh off a doubleheader sweep of Marist to extend its winning streak to five, the UC Davis softball team stays somewhat local to kick-off the week, before opening Big West Conference play at home. The Aggies begin by heading to Berkeley on Wednesday (March 27) for a 4 p.m. single game against California at Levine-Fricke Field, before coming home to host CSUN in a three-game series beginning Saturday (March 30) with a doubleheader, and concluding with a single game on Sunday (March 31). Both the doubleheader and the single game are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Davis, Calif.
IN THE POLLS: Neither UC Davis, California, nor CSUN, were ranked nationally in last week's polls.
UPDATE YOUR CALENDARS: After Mother Nature spoiled the first Causeway clash between UC Davis and Sacramento State, the Aggies and Hornets will make up the contest on April 30 at 3 p.m. at Shea Stadium in Sacramento. In addition, the Aggies' game against Pacific that was postponed due to weather back on Feb. 19, will now be played at La Rue Field on April 23 at 4 p.m.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, AGGIES!: UC Davis softball will be making its fourth all-time appearance on the ESPN family of networks as the Big West Conference announced that the Aggies' May 5 contest at Long Beach State has been selected to appear on ESPNU. First pitch from the LBSU Softball Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m. It will be the first time that the Aggies will face someone other than Cal State Fullerton in its four appearances after UC Davis battled the Titans in doubleheaders in 2014, 2016, and 2018. In addition, it was announced that the first two games of the series on May 4 against the 49ers will be broadcast live on ESPN3, giving the nation three chances to catch the Aggies.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS: California enters Wednesday's contest with a 20-11 overall record, but has lost four of its last six after dropping a three-game Pac-12 series to Utah, defeating Sacramento State, and falling in the first two games of the Stanford series before rain washed out the finale on Monday… Wednesday's contest will be only the fifth contest at home for the Golden Bears this season… Senior infielder Lindsay Rood leads the offense with a .482 average, smacking 11 doubles, scoring 36 times, and driving in 22… Sophomore outfielder Mikayla Coelho has slugged a team-high seven of the team's 27 home runs and driven in 25, while hitting .379… The senior duo of Kamalani Dung (8-4, 2.17 ERA) and Zoe Conley (6-7, 3.76) make up Cal's 1-2 punch in the circle, with the former striking out a team-high 86 and holding opponents to a .179 average.
SERIES NOTES: California leads the all-time series with UC Davis by a 28-6 count, having won the last 26 straight meetings dating back to a 4-1 Aggie win over the Golden Bears in 1978… The last four meetings between the two Northern California rivals have been decided by two runs or fewer, including a pair of decisions last season by the scores of 1-0 in Berkeley and 3-2 at La Rue Field… Wednesday marks the fifth time in the last six meetings that UC Davis will travel to Berkeley to face California and are 0-8 against the Golden Bears in the program's Division I era.
SCOUTING THE MATADORS: CSUN enters its Big West Conference openers with a 16-17 overall record after falling to top-ranked UCLA on Sunday and sweeping a three-game series from Saint Mary's… Junior outfielder Megan Stevens leads the Matador offense, batting .480 with 16 doubles, 26 runs scored, eight home runs, and 40 RBI… She is one of three regulars batting better than .300 on the year along with Sophomore outfielder Kira Cauley (.329) and senior utility Mackenzie Babbitt (.320)… Sophomore right-hander Jillian James has thrown the majority of innings for CSUN this season, posting a 10-7 record and 2.45 ERA in 25 appearances, striking out 140 in 117.2 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .198 average.
SERIES NOTES: CSUN leads the all-time series with UC Davis by a 33-17 count, but the Aggies have won two straight after taking the series from the Matadors in 2018… Prior to that, CSUN had won 11 of the previous 13 games in the series… Since joining the Division I ranks in 2008, UC Davis is 5-6 in series against the Matadors, including a sweep in 2012… The Aggies are 6-9 at home against CSUN since 2008, dropping the last two series to the Matadors at La Rue Field dating back to the 2013 campaign when UC Davis took 2-of-3... Six of the last nine meetings have been decided by two runs or fewer
LID-LIFTERS… BIG WEST STYLE: Entering its 12th season in the Big West Conference, the Aggies are 5-6 in league-opening series and 13-20 overall heading into this weekend's series at CSUN… UC Davis, which has won two of its last three league opening series, has opened the conference schedule against the Matadors three times, taking 2-of-3 from CSUN in 2010 on the road, 2011 at home, and last season on the road… The Aggies have opened conference play against only four of the league's seven softball playing members, facing Long Beach State four times (2008, 2009, 2014 and 2015), Hawai'i three times (2013, 2016 and 2017), CSUN three times (2010, 2011, and 2018), and UC Riverside once (2012)… This weekend's series marks the first time that the Aggies will open the conference schedule at home since taking two-of-three from Hawai'i in 2016.
