UC Davis falls short at Santa Clara

The Aggies return to action at Phil Swimley Field on Friday (Mar. 29) when they open Big West Conference play against UC Riverside with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 PM.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- UC Davis had a tough go of it offensively, managing only one hit and getting shut out in their 9-0 loss to Santa Clara on March 26.

With the defeat, UC Davis drops to 6-11 on the year. Senior Blake Hannah took the loss for the Aggies. His record moves to 1-3 this season. Santa Clara, on the other hand, improves to 4-18 with the victory. Junior Locke Bernhardt's 2019 mark also advances to 1-0.

Hannah got the ball out of the gate for UC Davis, working 3.2 innings of four-run ball. Hannah allowed six hits to go with no walks and three strikeouts, before he was replaced on the mound by senior Chris Brown. Brown pitched the following 1.1 innings, surrendering no runs on one hit, while walking none and striking out two. Next, the Aggies brought sophomore Nick Johnson to the hill, where he went 0.2 innings, giving up three runs and four hits, while walking none and striking out one, before handing the reins to junior Steve Ouellette. Ouellette yielded no runs and no hits in 1.1 innings on the bump, walking none and striking out three. UC Davis then turned to junior Andres Lara to finish out the contest. He toed the rubber for the ballgame's final inning, when Santa Clara scored two runs while picking up two hits, as the righty walked one and struck out one.

In total, UC Davis pitchers gave up the nine Santa Clara runs, all earned, on 13 hits, while walking one and striking out 10.

When they were in the batter's box, UC Davis was paced by junior Alejandro Lara, who went 0-for-1, picking up two walks along the way. Junior Cooper Morrison furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3. Junior Logan Denholm also chipped in for the Aggies, going 0-for-2, getting on base once via free pass in the ballgame. Freshman Cam Allie led the attack for the Santa Clara lineup, going 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs on the day.

All told, UC Davis plated zero runs in the contest, but left opportunities on the board, stranding five over the course of the game. Those zero runs came on one hit. The Aggies supplemented their offensive attack by drawing five walks from Santa Clara pitchers over the course of the game.

The Aggies will take the field again Mar. 29 when they open Big West Conference play at home against UC Riverside beginning at 2:30 p.m.
