Aggies roll past Highlanders in Big West home opener

The Aggies are back in action tomorrow (Mar. 30) for game two of the series beginning at 1 p.m. at Phil Swimley Field.

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore Joseph Myers had himself a day at the plate on Friday, picking up four hits, as UC Davis beat UC Riverside by a final of 10-2.

The Big West triumph moves UC Davis' overall record to 7-11, including 1-0 in conference play. UC Riverside, on the other hand, drops to 7-16, 0-1 in the Big West. Sophomore Brett Erwin got his third win of 2019 for the Aggies, bringing his record to 3-1. Junior Shamus Lyons took the loss for UC Riverside, which made his record 2-4 on the season.

UC Davis started Erwin on the hill, and he went 7.0 innings, surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking one and fanning six. The Aggies then turned to the bullpen, bringing in junior Steve Ouellette for the final 2.0 innings of the contest. In that span, Ouellette allowed no runs on no hits, walking none and fanning one.

UC Davis pitchers collectively gave up the two UC Riverside runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking one and striking out seven. Aggies pitchers did a great job avoiding dangerous situations in the contest, allowing only four UC Riverside at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Offensively, UC Davis was led by junior Logan Denholm, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs while walking once. Myers furnished a standout performance as well, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while finding his way aboard once via walk. Sophomore Tanner Murray also contributed for the Aggies, going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the ballgame. Senior Yeager Taylor led the attack for the UC Riverside lineup, going 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI on the day.

All told, UC Davis scored their 10 runs in the contest off of 12 hits, five of which went for extra bases, including one home run. The Aggies improved on their offensive attack by drawing four free passes from UC Riverside pitchers in Friday's game. UC Davis did some two-out damage as well, going 5-for-13 in those situations, with two of those hits coming from Myers.

The Aggies are back in action tomorrow (Mar. 30) for game two of the series beginning at 1 p.m. at Phil Swimley Field.
