DAVIS, Calif. — Senior
Meghan Bradbury tied the program's Division I single-season record with her seventh home run of the season to pace an 11-hit attack, while senior left-hander
Sara Cadona struck out a pair as part of a four-hit shutout, leading host UC Davis to a 13-0, five-inning victory over Rider to close out the 2019 Capital Classic on Sunday morning at La Rue Field.
The Aggies, who finished 4-1 at their own tournament, improved to 22-5 overall with their third straight victory — and their 11th in their last 12 games — avenging an earlier, 2-1, eight-inning loss to the Broncs on Friday. The win total is just five short of the program's Division I single-season mark for wins set last year (27) and continues a run that has seen UC Davis post at least 20 wins in each of the last three seasons.
Cadona improved to 2-0 overall on the year, allowing only six baserunners — but only one of those reaching second base. All four of her hits allowed were singles, stranding three of the six on base.
Meanwhile the offense was busy piling on the runs early and often, scoring three in the first, five in the second, two in the third, and three more in the fourth, en route to the run-rule win.
Bradbury, who was one of 10 Aggie batters to finish with a hit on the day, but the only one to finish with multiple hits, wasted little time in getting her team on the board, following up a walk to teammate
Isabella Leon and a single by
Alyse Rojas with a three-run shot to left for a 3-0 lead.
Her seventh home run of the season matched the program's Division I single-season mark shared by Kelly Zboralske and Lauryn Saunders set in 2014. Her next long ball will be the most by a UC Davis hitter since Deanna Menapace finished with 10 in 2007.
Back-to-back singles by
Sommer Kisling and Leon set the stage in the second, both coming home on an error in the outfield for a 5-0 lead, while Bradbury continued to add to the total with an RBI double to center for a six-run advantage. Three batters later, sophomore
Riley Siegel slugged the Aggies' second home run of the day — and her first of the year — over the wall in left to cap the five-run inning and an 8-0 lead.
A throwing error scored
Autumn Miller to open the scoring in the third as
Alyse Rojas later added an RBI ground out to put UC Davis in double digits in the run column for the fifth time this season, before the Aggies closed out the contest with a three-run fourth thanks to a steal of home by
Alexis Villalobos and RBI singles from
Caroline Figueroa and
Alex Sotomayor.
Leon finished with three runs scored on the day, upping her season total to 28 on the year — the most since Brianna Warner scored 33 times in 2017 and ranking seventh on the school's Division I single-season list. Meanwhile, the home runs by Bradbury and Siegel gave UC Davis 23 for the year, the most since the 2014 squad slugged 24 and just five shy of the program's single-season Division I record of 28 set by the 2008 team.
Along with her home run march, Bradbury's 29 RBI now place her just one shy of becoming only the third player in the program's Division I history to drive in 30 runs in a season, joining Menapace (33) in 2008 and Lotoszynski (30) in 2017
With the Aggies wrapping up their tournament schedule, they will take the week off for final exams before returning to the diamond on Saturday (March 23) at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against Marist at La Rue Field.
