DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior right-hander Katie Kibby and sophomore lefty Brooke Yanez each earned shutout victories as UC Davis swept Marist by scores of 4-0 and 3-0 in a non-conference collegiate softball doubleheader at La Rue Field Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies, owners of five consecutive shutouts, improve to 24-5 for the season. The Red Foxes slip to 11-14 overall.
Kibby allowed just one hit and issued three walks with five strikeouts in her third shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. Yanez fanned 12 Marist batters while scattering just three hits and three walks in her nightcap victory. That becomes the fifth shutout of the year for the communication major and last year's Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year.Â
In fact, Yanez has not allowed a tally in four straight appearances, and has gone six straight games without an earned run against her for a stretch of 33.2 consecutive innings. That run, which dates back to a March 8 win against San Jose State, includes her March 12 historic perfect game against Sacramento State.
Outfielders Alyse Rojas and Marisa Given were the only two Aggies to earn hits in each contest. Rojas went 2-for-3 in the opener, then led off Game 2 with a third bunt hit. However, she collided with Marist first baseman Olivia Knopf on the play and left the game.
UC Davis returns to action for a road contest at Cal on Wednesday, then begins Big West play in one week when it hosts CSUN for a three-game set from March 30-31.
UC DAVIS 4, MARIST 0
Kibby's one-hit shutout and 2-for-3 hitting from Rojas boosted the Aggies to the 4-0 win in Saturday's opener. Given and Megan Bower also drove in runs for UC Davis offensively.
The Aggies got on the board in the first inning when Rojas beat out a bunt to push shortstop Issabella Leon to third. With the runners at the corners, UC Davis attempted a double steal. Rojas was thrown out at second but Leon came home untouched for the game's first run.
Rojas again reached on a bunt single, then advanced on a throwing error to lead off the fourth frame. Two batters later, Given drove a bounding ball through the middle of the infield. The ball glanced off the glove of Marist's Brandi Coon and rolled into short center, allowing the speedy Rojas plenty of time to come home for the Aggies' second run.
UC Davis continued to stretch its lead in support of Kibby's pitching. Bower's RBI double scored Marissa Jauregui in the fifth, then a Calista Phippen wild pitch with runners at the corners pushed catcher Riley Siegel across the plate. Meanwhile, Kibby retired 11 straight to finish the game.
UC DAVIS 3, MARIST 0
Yanez fanned 12 batters – her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the year – to lead UC Davis to its 3-0 nightcap win over the Red Foxes. Leon, Rojas, Marisa Given and pinch hitter Alex Sotomayor each collected hits for the Aggies on the offensive side.
Yanez retired 13 straight batters from the third to seventh innings, even fanning the side in the fourth. Meanwhile, she enjoyed offensive support in each of the third and fourth innings, albeit all on unearned runs. UC Davis got on the board on a double-steal attempt with Bower and Leon. An errant throw to retire Leon allowed the junior shortstop to scamper home for the contest's first run.
In the fourth, a dropped infield pop-up allowed UC Davis to have two runners aboard with no outs. Maddie Rojas moved Siegel and Given to second and third, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt; then Autumn Miller lifted a fly into deep left to bring home Given. One batter later, Leon ripped a double down the left-field line to score Siegel. Even with the error, the Red Foxes had a chance to close out the fourth before Leon's RBI double, but the infielders failed to track a pop foul near their own dugout.
Sotomayor had her lone hit of the day as a pinch hitter for Siegel in the sixth. Saturday's doubleheader had particular significance for her: the game was the team's annual "Salute to Heroes" date. Her father, Fernando Soto, serves in the U.S. Marine Corps and was selected to throw out the ceremonial first pitch – with Sotomayor at catcher – prior to the first game.
