Triton Invite hosted by No. 20 UC San Diego
Feb. 9-10, 2019
Triton Pool // Canyonview Pool // La Jolla, Calif.
LA JOLLA, Calif. — No. 11 UC Davis split the opening day at the Triton Invite, defeating No. 25t Marist 11-7 in the opening round, before falling 6-3 to No. 3 UCLA in game two. The Aggies return to the pool tomorrow, taking on Big West foe No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at 9:50 AM, looking to earn a spot in the fifth place play-off game.
Annie Kutt, Chloe Robinson, and Noelle Wijnbelt each finished the day with three goals apiece, with Kutt's trio coming from a hat trick in the first game against Marist. Wijnbelt kept her scoring streak alive, notching two goals against Marist, and one against UCLA, while Robinson did the opposite by posting two against the Bruins. Kathleen Schafle finished the day with a team-high four steals.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an early lead, scoring first in the game, and extending their advantage to 5-3 with just 1:41 left in the half. UC Davis then responded with six unanswered goals from six different players to take the lead for the first time since the start of the second period. The Aggies would be too much for Marist, as they hung on for an 11-7 victory.
The second game of the tournament for UC Davis was a rematch of a close 13-8 loss to the Bruins at the Cal Cup a few weeks ago, with the Aggies ready for their rebuttal. In the lowest-scoring game of the season so far for the Aggies, the Bruins got out to a 2-0 lead, before Robinson found the cage with just six seconds remaining in the first period for the only UC Davis goal of the half.
The third period proved to be quiet, with neither team scoring, thanks to goalkeeper Caitlin Golding's first stop of the game. UCLA would earn its only goal of the second half to extend the lead to 6-1, before Robinson and Wijnbelt scored to end the game.
The Triton Invite continues Sunday, with two games. The Aggies face No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at 9:50 AM, and will play either LMU or Arizona State in the second game to determine fifth through eighth place.
