DAVIS, Calif. — Freshman
Megan Bower finished 2-for-4 with her first career home run and two runs driven in to lead a group of four Aggies with two hits on the day, while sophomore
Alyse Rojas drove in three more, helping lift UC Davis to a 10-4 win over Montana to close out day two of the 2019 NorCal Kickoff at La Rue Field.
The Aggies improved to 3-0 on the young season with the win as weather conspired to shorten the second day of tournament play. UC Davis' nightcap against CSU Bakersfield was cancelled and will not be made up.
The Lady Griz, who got hits from five different players, fell to 1-3 overall.
Bower's bomb, which cleared the fence in left field got the scoring started for the home side, which jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the first five innings en route to the win. Rojas' bases-clearing double down the line in left in the second staked the Aggies to a 4-0 advantage, while
Meghan Bradbury piled on with an RBI double in the third made it a 5-0 contest.
Junior
Marisa Given tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings, scoring teammate
Riley Siegel with a double in the former, and plating Bradbury with the team's seventh run with a ground out in the fifth as UC Davis never looked back.
Montana answered with a big inning in the fifth, scoring four times for its only runs of the game on a bases-loaded hit batter and three singles, but Bower knocked an RBI single back through the box and
Isabella Leon added a run-scoring ground out in the sixth for a 9-4 advantage. A throwing error by the Lady Griz in the seven accounted for the final run as freshman
Claudia Kim scored for the final margin.
Senior
Sara Cadona (1-0) earned her first win of the season and her second career victory, scattering five hits over seven innings of work. Tristin Achenbach (0-1) suffered the loss for Montana, tagged for six earned on five hits over just 2.1 innings.
Seven of the Aggies' nine starters finished with hits as Leon, Bradbury, and
Marissa Jauregui, each joined Bower in the multi-hit club, while Siegel scored twice and was on base three times thanks to a single and a pair of walks.
The final day of tournament play is scheduled to kick off at 9:30 a.m., with UC Santa Barbara take on Nevada, followed by the Gauchos and Santa Clara at Noon. UC Davis faces the Wolf Pack at 2:30 p.m. in the final contest of the tournament.
