Aggies wrap up first road series at Arizona State

UC Davis resumes action at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium in a mid-week battle against Causeway rival Sacramento State on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 2 p.m.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Senior Caleb Van Blake slugged his ninth career home run, while redshirt sophomore Jackson O'Boy logged his first career hit (and RBI) and freshman Jalen Smith led all Aggies with the first multi-hit performance of his career, but it wasn't enough to offset an 18-hit attack by the Arizona State offense as the host Sun Devils swept their second straight series of 2019 with a 17-2 win on Sunday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Aggies fell to a 3-4 overall mark while the Sun Devils improved to a perfect 7-0 record on the season.

The Sun Devils scored 16 times in the first four innings to put the game out of reach early, holding the Aggies scoreless until the visitor half of the fifth when Van Blake logged his ninth career home run and second of the 2019 season.

Redshirt sophomore Colton Evans got things started for the Aggies with a single to left center field in the visitor half of the eighth and moved to second on a hit-by-pitch at bat by freshman Kyler Arenado before advancing to third on a misplayed ball off the bat of junior Cooper Morrison. O'Boy's first career hit as an Aggie plated Evans to make it 2-17, but the fans at Phoenix Municipal Stadium would see no other scores from either squad, lifting Arizona State to its seventh consecutive win and second series sweep of the season.

RJ Dabovich (2-0) earned the win for the Sun Devils, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out three over seven innings on the mound before turning it over to the bullpen. Senior left-hander Chris Brown (1-1) suffered the loss for UC Davis, allowing eight runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings of work.
