DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis ran its winning streak to five games with a win in the opener, but a late-inning rally came up a run short in the nightcap, as the Aggies split their day three results at the 2019 Aggie Invitational on Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field.
With the results, UC Davis moves to 10-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in the tournament, defeating SeattleU by the score of 3-1 in the day's first game, before falling to Idaho State, 3-2, in the day's second game.
The Aggies take on Saint Mary's in their tournament finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24) at 1:15 p.m.
GAME 1: UC DAVIS 3, SEATTLE 1
Meghan Bradbury's two-run double in the first erased an early deficit and sophomore
Riley Siegel added an RBI single in the third in support of a superb outing from left-hander
Brooke Yanez, lifting the Aggies to the 3-1 win in the opener.
Yanez (7-1) went the distance, allowing a run on just four hits, striking out eight while walking only one. In three starts during this weekend's tournament, Yanez is 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA, striking out 29 hitters in 19 innings and holding opponents to a .162 average.
Andie Larkins (2-1) suffered the loss for the Redhawks — their second in as many days to the Aggies following a 1-0 five-inning decision that went UC Davis' way after the game was halted due to darkness. Larkins allowed two earned on five hits over five innings, striking out five, before giving way to Shianne Smith.
After Kaylee Ree's RBI single staked SeattleU to the early lead, UC Davis answered quickly in the home half of the first inning, getting a lead-off walk by
Isabella Leon and a one-out single by
Megan Bower to bring up Bradbury, who smoked a 1-2 pitch to left for a double, scoring both of her teammates ahead of her for a 2-1 advantage.
The Aggies threatened to pile on, scoring another run in the third on Siegel's single that scored Leon, who reached on an error for the 3-1 lead, but left the bases loaded. UC Davis also left runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth, but the two-run lead was more than enough for Yanez, who retired 10 straight hitters at one point and 17 of the final 18, allowing only a pair of harmless singles in the second and fifth innings.
Bower finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Leon added a fourth-inning single for the Aggies' only other hit on the day.
Olivia Viggiano finished 2-for-3 to lead the Redhawks.
GAME 2: IDAHO STATE 3, UC DAVIS 2
Freshman
Megan Bower finished 2-for-3 — including her fourth home run of the season to make it a one-run game in the sixth inning — but the Aggies' rally would come up a run short as a three-run fifth by Idaho State proved to be the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Bengals.
Bradbury followed up her two RBI opener by getting her team on the board first once again, lofting a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring
Isabella Leon for the 1-0 advantage.
Idaho State stranded a pair of Aggie runners in scoring position in the first and another in the fourth before breaking through for its big inning in the fifth, scoring three times on RBI singles by Cassidy Fitzgerald and Emma Bordenkecher, and a UC Davis miscue for the 3-1 advantage.
After stranding a runner in the sixth, Bower helped the Aggies answer in the sixth, blasting a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left to make it 3-2. Two batters later, a triple to centerfield by Marisa given put the tying run just 60 feet away and chased starter Mariah Mulcahy in favor of Autumn Pease, who got a pop up and strikeout to end the threat.
UC Davis had one more rally in it as
Autumn Miller laced a one-out single in the seventh, but Pease was able to work away from danger once again, getting a strikeout and fly ball to end the game.
Junior
Katie Kibby (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing only one earned run on six hits and striking out four in the complete-game effort. Mulcahy (1-1) earned her first win of the year, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four over 5 1/3 innings before Pease nailed down her first save of the year.
Bower's two-hit day marked her fourth multi-hit game of the season, tying teammate
Isabella Leon for the team lead.
