Aggies twirl a shutout in tourney finale

Cadona and Kibby scatter four hits, four UC Davis batters finish with two hits apiece

DAVIS, Calif. — Senior Sara Cadona and junior Katie Kibby combined on a four-hit shutout, while four different Aggies finished with two hits on the day, lifting host UC Davis to its second shutout of the year with a 6-0 victory over Saint Mary's to close out the 2019 Aggie Invitational at La Rue Field.

The Aggies finished 5-1 at their own event, improving to 11-3 overall on the season and winning for the eighth time in nine tries at La Rue Field.

The Gaels, meanwhile, fell to 2-9 overall, led by two hits at the top of the order from Abbey Mariani.

Cadona started and went the first three innings, surrendering only three hits while stranding four baserunners — two of those in scoring position. Kibby (3-2) took over in the fourth and went the rest of the way, retiring the first seven hitters she faced while allowing only a single and a walk in the sixth.

Meanwhile, junior outfielder Marisa Given did just about all she could to give the Aggies the only lead they would need, following up an Autumn Miller single with a triple to the corner in right field, scoring Miller for the 1-0 advantage. A few pitches later, she was able to draw a throw on a squeeze attempt that sailed past the Saint Mary's third baseman, allowing the Salinas, Calif., native to easily score for a two-run lead.

The score stayed that way until the sixth when UC Davis sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times to put the game out of reach. A double by Given — capping a run of three straight hits by the Aggies — plated Miller once again to make it 3-0 and, after a pitching change, a Maddie Rojas single gave the home team a 4-0 lead.

An error on a ball hit by Isabella Leon prolonged the inning and scored Given to make it 5-0, while Brooke Yanez laced a pinch-hit single to right, scoring Rojas for the final tally.

Miller, Riley Siegel, Given, and Maddie Rojas, finished with a pair of hits apiece — the latter three players collecting their second multi-hit games of the season.

The Aggies make a quick return to the diamond on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 2:30 p.m., heading across the Causeway for the first of two rivalry meetings with Sacramento State, before making the jaunt to Southern California to participate in the San Diego Classic beginning Friday (March) and running through Sunday (March 3).
