Aggies hold second after day three at MPSF

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Senior psychology major Solie Laughlin defended her fourth straight title in the 400 IM and led off the Aggies' second-place 400 medley relay team, freshman Mia Motekaitis finished second overall in the 200 free with the fifth-fastest time in school history, and freshman Taylor Hornberger shattered the UC Davis all-time record in the three-meter program with a prelim score of 312.55 to highlight the third day of competition at the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming and diving championships on Friday in Southern California.

Seven Aggies advanced to individual championship finals and eight more went on to earn second swims and dives on the day. Laughlin defended her title in the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:11.66, while Hornberger eclipsed her previous season-high score of 301.91 with a 312.55 en route to a third-place prelim finish in the three-meter program. Sophomore Katie Truong earned a spot in the consolation final and finished 10th on the day with a career-best score of 294.00, marking her first NCAA Zone Qualifying score of the season on the high boards. 

Hawai'i continues to extend its lead over the rest of the field with 538 points, while the Aggies maintain their second-place position with 392 points. UC Santa Barbara sits in third with 353 points, while BYU jumped two spots into fourth place with 352 points. 

Redshirt junior Mia Facey got the evening started for UC Davis with a fifth-place finish in the 100 fly thanks to a season-best time of 55.04. Freshman Amanda Wilson finished third in the "B" final and 11th overall, while senior Nina Gonzalez finished 16th with a time of 56.70. 

Laughlin shaved off nearly 10 seconds from her fourth-place prelim time of 4:20.09 en route to her fourth career title with a season-best time of 4:11.66. Sophomore Leah Timmerman also earned a second swim, improving one spot from the prelims to finish 20th overall with a career-best time of 4:34.87. 

In the championship finals of the 200 free, Motekaitis jumped two spots to finish second on the night with the fifth-fastest time by an Aggie in program history at 1:47.86. Senior Iris Brand also earned a spot in the "A" final touching eighth overall with a time of 1:51.66. Junior Jamie Pincin finished fifth in the consolation final and 13th overall after placing 10th in the prelims with a career-best time of 1:50.40, while sophomore Kathryn Bockman touched 23rd overall (1:54.86). 

Senior Kristin Schumann improved one spot to finish seventh overall in the championship final of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.81, while junior Tori Kaleta touched 21st overall (1:05.88).

Senior Eva Chung posted the seventh-fastest time program history in the 100 back en route to a seventh place prelim finish before capping off the last individual final of the night for UC Davis with an eighth-place finish in the "A" final (56.15). Junior Mia Cunnan also finished third in the consolation final and 11th overall with a career best time of 56.45--the ninth-fastest time by an Aggie swimmer. 

UC Davis then closed out the night with a season-best time in the 400 medley relay by the team of Laughlin, Schumann, Motekaitis, and Facey who touched second overall with a time of 3:41.14. 

Meanwhile at the Marguerite Aquatic Center in Mission Viejo, Calif., the divers wrapped up their second day of competition led by Hornberger who finished fourth in the championship round of the three-meter program and set a new school record with a score of 312.55 to finish third in the prelims. Truong finished second in the consolation final and 10th overall with a career-best score of 294.00--her first NCAA Zone Qualifying score on the high boards this season. Senior Inessa Toropov finished 17th overall (236.75) ahead of sophomore Amanda Chau in 18th (224.80), Alisha Miller in 19th (220.95) and freshman Londen Christensen in 20th (205.85). 

The final day of MPSF championship competition begins tomorrow (Feb. 23) at 9 a.m. with prelims in the 200 backstroke, 100 free, 200 breaststroke, and 200 fly with finals in those events plus the 1650 free and 400 free relay later in the day beginning at 5 p.m. Finals for the women's platform event will begin at 12 p.m.
