Aggies fall at No. 4 SMU

OFFICAL SCORESHEET (PDF)

DALLAS, Tex. — The UC Davis equestrian team wrapped up its Texas road trip against United Equestrian Conference colleague No. 4 SMU on Friday afternoon, with all four Aggies posting career-best Reining scores to help UC Davis split the event, 2-2, with the Mustangs—who are ranked fifth in the nation in the event. But the deficit would prove too much to overcome for the Aggies, lifting the Mustangs to a 13-3 win over UC Davis.

The Aggies fell to a 1-3 overall season record with a 1-1 UEC mark. The No. 4 Mustangs improved to 7-2 on the year with a perfect 3-0 league mark. The Aggies will return home to the UC Davis Equestrian Center for their next meet on Saturday, Mar. 2 when UC Davis hosts UEC colleague Fresno State at 12 p.m.

The Mustangs, who are ranked among the top five in the nation in each event, jumped out to an early lead after sweeping the Aggies in Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship.

Senior plant sciences major Lilly Ulrich earned the Aggies' lone point in Equitation Over Fences with a team-high score, edging Lexi Murphy, 80-79. Ulrich will enter the Aggies' next competition with an even 2-2 mark.

After the Mustangs stole the first Reining point of the afternoon, sophomore Charlize Zuraek answered with the highest score by an Aggie rider this season—and third-highest of the afternoon—to defeat Aubrey Alderman, 70-65. Zuraek improves to a 2-1 individual mark and will enter the Aggies' next competition on a two-dual winning streak. Senior genetics and genomics major Laurel Jackson then capped off the afternoon with a career-best score of 69.5 to help UC Davis split the event, 2-2. Seniors Olivia Russell and Haley Fredericks also turned in career-best scores for the Aggies, earning a 67.5 and 68, respectively.

The Aggies also split Equitation on the Flat, 2-2, with the No. 8 Horned Frogs during Thursday's meet at TCU.

UC Davis returns to action Saturday, Mar. 2, when the Aggies host UEC colleague Fresno State at the UC Davis equestrian Center at 12 p.m.
