LA MIRADA, Calif. — Day two of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships marked a record-setting night for the Aggies as the quartet of
Jamie Pincin,
Mia Facey,
Iris Brand, and
Mia Cunnan set a new all-time school record in the 200 free relay with a winning time of 1:31.65. Senior
Solie Laughlin secured her first ever title in the 200 IM in career-best time, while freshman
Mia Motekaitis logged the second-fastest time in school history in the 500 free to finish second overall, redshirt junior
Mia Facey finished third in the 50 free, and freshman
Taylor Hornberger finished second in the 1-meter championship final to help UC Davis climb from third to second as a team.Â
Twelve Aggies in all earned second swims on the afternoon with at least two Aggies securing spots in each of the championship finals.Â
Hawai'i continues to pace the field with 227 points but the Aggies are closing in fast with 209 points. UC Santa Barbara was bumped down to third place with 177 points ahead of Pacific in fourth with 130 points.Â
UC Davis opened the finals portion of the second day of competition on a high note, with Pincin, Facey, Brand, and Cunnan setting a new school record in the 200 free relay (1:31.65) en route to the Aggies' first event win of the night. The quartet de-throwned the 2016 MPSF team of Hilvy Cheung, Brittany Rojo,
Iris Brand, and Kirsten Brand by just three one-hundredths of a second.Â
Motekaitis then logged the second-fastest 500 free time in school history at 4:49.06 to finish second overall in her MPSF debut, eclipsing her prelim finish by over three seconds. After touching eighth overall in the prelims with a career-best time of 4:57.68, junior
Olivia Smith improved one spot to finish seventh on the night with a time of 4:58.94. Senior
Nina Gonzalez, sophomore
Kathryn Bockman, and freshman
Amanda Wilson also earned second swims in the event, going on to finish 19th, 22nd, and 24th overall, respectively.Â
After exhibitioning the event in previous years, Laughlin took home top honors in the 200 IM with a career-best time of 1:59.44 to rank second on the all-time top 10 list. Fellow senior
Eva Chung turned in a career-best time of 2:02.40 to finish fifth in the prelims before improving one spot in the championship final, while freshman
Kyla Leacox touched first in the "B" final with a career-best time of 2:02.61. Chung and Leacox currently rank ninth and tenth in the all-time record books, respectively.Â
Facey then became one of only four Aggies in school history to break 23 seconds in the 50 free after turning in a career-best time of 22.92 to finish third in the prelims. The Napa, Calif.-native later secured a podium finish with a time of 23.22 in the "A" final, while Pincin jumped two spots to finish fifth overall with a time of 23.28. Facey now ranks tied for third in the UC Davis record books while Pincin's prelim time of 23.00 ranks fifth.Â
Meanwhile at the Marguerite Aquatics Center in Mission Viejo, Calif., the divers kicked off their first day of competition led by freshman
Taylor Hornberger, who improved four spots from her sixth-place prelim finish (275.50) to take second in the championship round with a score of 290.20. Fellow freshman
Londen Christensen and sophomore
Katie Truong both earned second dives, finishing fourth (265.95) and sixth (255.05) in the consolation final, respectively. Senior
Inessa Toropov finished 18th with a score of 213.00, ahead of sophomores
Amanda Chau in 19th (207.25) and
Alisha Miller in 20th (188.50).Â
Day three of the MPSF championships begins tomorrow Feb. 22 at 9 a.m. with the prelims in the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, and 100 back with finals in those events plus the 400 medley relay later in the day at 5 p.m. The preliminary round of the women's 3-meter program will begin at 10 a.m. with finals scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
