Aggies outlast Bears in lacrosse slugfest

UC Davis overcomes initial deficit with 10-1 run

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Senior Taylor Cuenin and juniors Kate Graham and Maddie Myers each scored hat tricks to boost UC Davis in turning an initial 4-1 deficit into a 16-13 win over Mercer in collegiate women's lacrosse action at D.B. Milne Field Sunday.

The Aggies even their record to 2-2. The Bears drop to 0-2.

Attackers Amanda Outcalt and Sorana Larson each added two goals for UC Davis. Outcalt and senior Shannon Cross led the way with three assists apiece, while sophomore midfielder Mar Alvear chipped in a goal with two assists. Graham also picked up nine of the Aggies' 21 draw controls in the contest. Defender Addie Dearden led her team with four caused turnovers.

For Mercer, freshman Hailey Rhatigan netted four goals while senior Audrey Robertson matched Dearden's tally of four steals.

Junior Lily Morin scored back-to-back goals to boost the Bears to its 4-1 start by just the eighth minute. Larson ended the streak with her successful eight-meter conversion in the 12th, then Graham's feed to Outcalt reduced the margin to just 4-3 a minute later.

UC Davis finished the first half on a 6-1 run to hold an 8-6 lead at the break, then added four unanswered to start the second half to craft a 12-6 advantage. Cuenin and Graham each poured in two goals during that 10-1 stretch. Graham finished her third career hat trick with another strike in the 42nd minute, giving the Aggies a 13-7 lead.

Later in the second, Cross assisted Myers and Cuenin on consecutive goals to put UC Davis up by a 16-9 margin with seven minutes left. However, Mercer scored four straight to close out the contest -- two each by Rhatigan and Kelly Hagerty.

UC Davis dominated the draw, 21-10, and successfully converted 14 of 18 of its transition attempts.

Another Aggie highlight was the season debut of Ashley Lotoszynski, a former All-Big West Conference honorable mention infielder for the softball team. She relieved senior goalkeeper Grace Richards to guard the cage for the final 5:46 of play.

UC Davis comes home for a short week of practice before heading to road action against former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leaguemates Cal (Friday) and Stanford (Sunday).
