Aggies leaving Las Vegas with extra-inning win

Jauregui's sac fly in the eighth pushes across the go-ahead run

LAS VEGAS — Marissa Jauregui's sacrifice fly plated Alexis Villalobos with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, and the UC Davis softball team bounced back from an extra-inning loss with an extra-inning win of its own Sunday morning, edging Georgetown, 5-4, in the finale of the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic at Eller Media Stadium.

The Aggies close out the weekend with a 3-2 mark in tournament play and a 6-2 record overall, while the Hoyas, who rallied to tie the game with three runs in their half of the sixth, fell to 2-7 overall.

With Alexis Villalobos pinch running and placed on second base per the international tie breaker, junior Maddie Rojas successfully sacrificed her over to bring up Jauregui, who did enough to lift a ball into right field and plate her teammate for the one-run advantage.

Sophomore Riley Siegel, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles in the fourth and fifth innings, then came up with the play of the game in the home half, throwing behind pinch-runner Casey Kozak at second base as freshman Sommer Kisling applied the tag for the first out of the eighth. A fly ball and a ground out around a now harmless single ended the contest as the six wins in the first eight games are the most for UC Davis since the 2010 squad opened with the same record.

Sophomore left-hander Brooke Yanez (4-1) earned the win in relief of starter Sara Cadona, throwing five innings and striking out three, while London Diller suffered the loss despite throwing two innings of shutout, hitless relief. Cadona went the first three innings, allowing a run on two hits.

Junior Isabella Leon, who entered the day with just one hit on the weekend, exploded for three hits on the day — her first staking the Aggies to the early lead. After the first of three walks on the day for sophomore Alyse Rojas, Leon laced a triple to right field, plating her teammate for the 1-0 lead.

After Georgetown answered the tie the game in the third, Leon once again got things started in the fifth, leading off with a single and scoring two batters later when Meghan Bradbury launched her second home run of the season, also scoring Marisa Given (who singled) ahead of her for a 4-1 lead.

The Hoyas weren't done yet, however, answering by plating three runs of their own in the sixth on a bases-clearing triple off the bat by Alexa Dolby to tie things up at four and set the stage for extra innings.

UC Davis opens an extended run at home beginning Tuesday, hosting Pacific in a single game at La Rue Field at 2:30 p.m. It is the first of seven games in five days for the Aggies, who host the Aggie Invitational beginning with a doubleheader against UTEP on Thursday (Feb. 21) at noon.
