SANTA CLARA, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis remains undefeated in doubles points this season, but could not overcome the Broncos in singles, falling 5-2 at the Degheri Tennis Center.
In Sunday's rescheduled match, the Aggies earned the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. Ivan Thamma and David Goulak continue to lock down the top spot, defeating Santa Clara's Andrew Gu and Jesus Barajas 6-3 for their 14th win of the year together, and their fifth consecutive victory. Alex Scemanenco and Daniel Landa clinched the doubles point for the fifth time this season, winning over Arthur Neuhaus and Vasileias Iliopoulos, 6-4. Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson were down 4-5 when the match was stopped.
In singles play, the Broncos started strong, taking the first set on all six courts, and the first five matches to finish. Iliopoulos clinched the match for Santa Clara at 4-1, downing UC Davis' Swanson at the No. 4 position. Thamma and Nil Giraldez were the remaining two matches on court, and each was in a three-set battle. Giraldez was grinding away at Connor Garnet at No. 3, but fell 6-4 in the third, while Thamma forced a tiebreaker at 6-6 to win UC Davis' lone singles match, by a 10-8 result.
The Aggies will return to the Bay Area on Friday, Feb. 22, for a doubleheader day at Holy Names and No. 10 Stanford.
