IRVINE, Calif. – For the second straight season, UC Davis swept its Central California road trip, and senior communications major TJ Shorts II's all-around effort played a key role in those results. By showcasing firsthand why he is the reigning Big West Player of the Year — he also won last year's Newcomer of the Year Award, the conference's first-ever recipient of its two major awards — Shorts II earned Big West Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Of his game-high 21 points scored at UC Santa Barbara in last Saturday's ESPNU broadcast, he hit four free throws in a row in the final minute to help UC Davis pull away and defeat the Gauchos on their home court. The Tustin native's fifth 20-point game of the season also helped the Aggies record their first league sweep of the season and extend the team's win streak to three.

In last Thursday's game at Cal Poly, he led all players with 18 points and earned seven of the team's 12 assists; by comparison, the entire Cal Poly team only collected 10 assists that evening. Shorts II also finished with five boards, one shy of a game high.

For the week, he averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game, shot .625 overall, .800 at the free throw line and was responsible or 31 percent of his team's offense.

UC Davis will return to the Pavilion for its next set of games, which starts on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. league tilt versus CSUN. After hosting Long Beach State in Saturday's 7 p.m. matchup, the Aggies will compete in its final league road games of the season: at Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 21) and at CSUN (Feb. 23) in a game broadcasted on ESPN3. Afterwards, men's basketball will play its final four BWC games on Hamilton Court before heading to the Honda Center to compete in this year's Big West Men's Basketball Tournament.
