FRESNO, Calif. — After the first day of action in Fresno, Arjith Jayaraman and Brett Brinkman advanced through the first round of singles, while UC Davis featured new doubles teams at the Bulldog Classic at Fresno State.
Starting the day with doubles, Daniel Landa partnered with Andrei Volgin in the tournament's top draw, and were the only UC Davis pair to emerge victorious, as they defeated St. Mary's Matis Bot and Andy Watterson, 8-6. The win extends Volgin's doubles win streak to five straight.
Mitchell Davis teamed up with Chethan Swanson, while Dariush Jalali paired with Brinkman, but both fell in an identical 8-6 result.
In singles, the Aggies were led by Jayaraman in the Red draw, and Brinkman in the White draw, as both won their opening round. Jayaraman won a three-set battle with Daniel Velek from UC Riverside, and recorded a dominant 6-2 third set. Up next for Jayaraman will be Nitzan Ricklis, from San Francisco, who played primarily at Nos. 2 and 3 for the Dons last season.
In the tournament's White bracket, Brinkman put up a straightforward win, defeating Sacramento State's Michael Vizcarra 6-3, 6-0. Brinkman moves on to play Johan Garpered, also from San Francisco, Saturday morning.
Traveling across the country, Ivan Thamma and David Goulak are set for the 2019 ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa. The ITA released the prequalifying singles draws Friday, with both Aggies in action.
Thamma earned a #17-32 seed, and will face Cotter Wilson of Ole Miss first round at 9:30 AM CT (7:30 AM PT) at the Case Tennis Center. Wilson competed at the No. 5 and 6 spots in the singles lineup in his collegiate debut, and put together a 5-1 record at No. 5.
Goulak faces Martins Rocens of NC State, with the match scheduled for 10 AM CT (8 AM PT) at the Philcrest Hills Tennis Club. Rocens is a freshman standout from Latvia, where he was the 2017 Latvian National Champion in singles and doubles.
The full draw is available on the ITA website, with live streaming available for the University of Tulsa courts.
