Aggies take reining, fall to Oklahoma State in home opener

Davis, Calif. - Kicking off the first of a stretch of three straight meets at the UC Davis Equestrian Center, the Aggie equestrian team took reining for the second straight meet but fell to the visiting Oklahoma State Cowgirls 13-5.

The Aggies started the day with rides of 74 from Keely Laughlin and 78 from Sabin Marquardt in Fences but facing the third-ranked team in the country, Oklahoma State went on to pull away 4-1 in the opening event.

With Reining going concurrently in the Arboretum Arena at the Equestrian Center, the Aggies were already fighting back.

Kendal Scheiner gave the Aggies a point with a 65-point ride on Bella, Charlize Zuraek scored a 68 on Rascal, and Paige Neufeld and Macey Newkirk forced ties against their Oklahoma State counterparts to give UC Davis a 2-1 win and get them within 3-5 at that point in the meet.

The visiting Cowgirls came back to complete a near-sweep of Flat to wrap up competition in the main arena, with Sabin Marquardt scoring the Aggies' lone point on Stakky with a 64. Competing in her first NCAA home meet freshman Ella Longo narrowly fell to eventual Flat MOP Hannah Janson with a 75-77 matchup.

Oklahoma State finished the day with four 70-plus point rides in Horsemanship to take that event 4-1. Sarah Finkel received the Aggies' point in Horsemanship with a 73.

The loss drops UC Davis to 0-3, though the Reining team have now beaten back-to-back ranked squads as Delaware State crept into the NCEA top-10 after defeating the Aggies on Oct. 5.

UC Davis don't travel away from the UC Davis Equestrian Center until after the start of the new year. The Aggies will host Fresno State on Nov. 15 and Auburn on Jan. 31.
