STANFORD, Calif. — Daniel Landa and Andrei Volgin advance with an upset in the opening round of doubles, while Chethan Swanson put up two singles wins to reach the main draw round of 32 on Saturday at the ITA Northwest Regional, hosted by Stanford.
Joining top-seeded Ivan Thamma and David Goulak in the doubles round of 32, Landa and Volgin won their fourth consecutive match together to upset the No. 9 seeded Sema Pankin and Lefteris Neos (Portland) with a dominant 8-3 win. Of the 12 round of 64 matches that included seeded doubles pairs, Volgin and Landa were one of just two teams in the draw to upset their opponents.
Both teams will play at 9:15 AM Saturday, with the winners continuing with a second match at 10:45. Thamma/Goulak face Issa Yoshida and Carlos Donat of Portland, who blanked their Portland State opponents 8-0 in the first round, while Landa and Volgin take on Seattle U's Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria and Alex Chan.
In singles play, Swanson advanced out of the round of 128 with a three set win over Washington's Kasper Smith, before getting his first collegiate double-bagel win in the round of 64 over Martin Bats. Swanson moves on to be the only Aggie in the main draw of singles, and is slated to play fifth-seeded Timothy Sah (Stanford) at 1:15 PM.
Thamma nearly put up two wins of his own, pushing ninth-seeded Bjorn Hoffmann of Cal to a marathon three-setter, but fell 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to be one of the last matches on at the Taube Family Tennis Center Friday night. Hoffmann finished 2018-19 with a 28-8 overall record for the Bears, and posted a 20-win dual season in the spring.
Four additional Aggies won their opening round of singles, but fell to seeded players in the round of 64. Several UC Davis players will also play in consolation singles matches Saturday.
