STANFORD, Calif. — UC Davis women's tennis faced some of the top competition in the nation on the opening day at the ITA Northwest Regional, with one Aggie duo advancing into the Round of 32 in doubles, while two Aggies reached the round of 64 in singles.
The standout tandem of Sara Tsukamoto and Lauren Ko continue to find success this fall, recording an 8-5 victory over Seattle's Hannah Gianan and Jade Lancaster in the first round of the main draw doubles. The Aggie pair advance to face Gonzaga's Tamara Anderson and Haruna Tsuruta Saturday morning at 9 AM.
In singles, UC Davis student-athletes were matched up with several nationally-ranked players, including No. 6 Michaela Gordon (Stanford) and No. 54 Vanessa Wong (Washington). Tsukamoto notched another win on the day, this time in singles, dispatching Rylee Braeden (Eastern Washington) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, but fell to ninth-seed Natsuho Arakawa (Washington) in the round of 64.
Also advancing out of the round of 128 in her ITA Regional debut was freshman Yana Gurevich, who defeated Pacific's Georgia Townsend, 6-4, 6-3. Gurevich then faced Cal's Valentina Ivanov, the tournament's fifth seed, but lost 6-1, 6-3.
Doubles play continues Saturday at 9 AM, with the winners advancing for a second match at 10 AM. Nearly every Aggie will be in action with extra singles and doubles matches to be played at the Taube Family Tennis Center. Match assignments were not available at the time of this release.
