LONG BEACH, Calif. – Bryanna Duckett's first goal as an Aggie is one every UC Davis women's soccer fan will remember because it broke a 1-1 tie in Friday's Big West game at Long Beach State, broadcasted across the country on ESPN3, and led to a 2-1 victory for the Aggies against the defending Big West regular season and conference tournament champions.

This is the Aggies' first win against the 49ers on their home turf since September 11, 1984; UC Davis' last two head-to-head victories took place at Aggie Soccer Field. Friday's result is the first victory for the Aggies, against the 49ers, since October 31, 2010.

UC Davis will seek a sweep of its Southern California road games when it heads to UC Riverside for Sunday's 2 p.m. matchup, and will arrive to UCR Soccer Stadium with a 6-9 overall and 1-4 conference record. Long Beach State will continue its season at 3-10 and 1-3.

It was apparent to everyone at George Allen Field that Long Beach State wanted to score the first goal of the game as quickly as possible with the way it attacked the Aggies' goal once the game began.

Jessica Lima made two huge saves early by snaring a 49er header before anyone had a chance to redirect the ball, and by winning a 1v1 Long Beach State counterattack by winning a footrace a few yards outside the 18-yard box and booting the ball to safety.

Once the Aggies withstood that initial LBSU attack, they created one of their own, and converted on that scoring opportunity when Janae Gonzalez one-timed a cross a handful of feet from the 49ers' goal to give UC Davis a 1-0 advantage.

As was the case with the first half, the 49ers quickly set the pace of play once action resumed in the second half, and tied the game at one apiece in the 49th minute.

Action in the second half mirrored the activity in the first: Once the Aggies withstood LBSU's initial scoring chances, it scored a goal midway through the half to quiet the 49er faithful in attendance.

This time, it was Duckett who made two key plays that ultimately led to the Aggies first win in Long Beach in over 30 years.

It was her hustle that forced a Long Beach State defender to knock the ball out of bounds; on the ensuing corner kick, it was Duckett's header that fooled the 49ers' goalkeeper and defender, whose duty was to protect the far post.

Standing seven yards away from the near post, Duckett simply out-worked and out-jumped every 49er that surrounded her, which allowed her to create solid contact on a header that flew across the goal and hit the far post before landing inside LBSU's net.

By making clutch saves all night long, Lima earned her third victory of the year. Compared to her counterpart who finished with two, the Aggies' netminder ended her evening with six saves.

Friday's result marked the first Big West victory in the Tracy Hamm era, and set the Aggies up for a potential sweep of its final Southern California road trip of the season. Live stats for Sunday's match are available at UCDavisAggies.com.
