Kutt, Schafle lead Aggies in losses to No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. Kathleen Schafle recorded a career-high four steals against No. 3 UCLA and Annie Kutt led the Aggies with a career-high five goals against No. 4 Cal in No. 13 UC Davis' pair of losses at the Cal Cup. The Aggies lost 8-13 to the Bruins, and 11-13 to the host team, Cal.

Saturday's result moves UC Davis to 2-3 for the season so far, with all three losses coming to ranked programs.

In the morning game against UCLA, six Aggies scored, with Schafle and Noelle Wijnbelt finding the cage twice. Schafle put UC Davis on the board first with a goal at 4:37 in the first period, closely followed by Devin Holcomb to keep the Aggies within one point at the close of the first period. After Schafle netted the tying goal to open the second period, the Bruins put distance between the teams with three goals for a 8-5 lead at the half. Three Aggies would go on to score, including Chloe Robinson taking advantage of a five meter penalty, but ultimately UCLA came out on top 13-8.

In the Aggies' second game of the day, Kutt completed a hat trick and then some to record a single game career-high five goals — nearly half of the team score. Schafle and redshirt freshman Allyson Clague each recorded two goals each, while Robinson pitched in two assists. UC Davis erased a two-goal deficit in the first period to take the lead 6-5 at the half. Clague would open the second half with a goal to extend the UC Davis lead to 7-5, before Kutt traded goals with the Bears to reach the Aggies' largest lead of the game at 10-7. The Bears responded with six unanswered goals to take the lead for good, despite a last-minute goal from Schafle.

The Aggies will stay on the road, competing in the Stanford Invite next weekend, Feb. 2-3. UC Davis will play the Chinese National Team in an exhibition, No. 9 Michigan, No. 8 Pacific, and No. 18T Indiana.
