DAVIS, Calif. — Noelle Wijnbelt, Allyson Clague, Annie Kutt, and Chloe Robinson all scored hat tricks in No. 10 UC Davis' split result at its home tournament, the Aggie Invite, on Saturday. The Aggies outscored the Santa Clara Broncos 15-5 in the morning game, but fell to No. 20 San Jose State late in the fourth period for a 12-9 result in favor of the Spartans in the second game of the day.
The Broncos were held to a mere .161 shooting percent, and were shutout at the half by a score of 10-0, thanks to goals from seven different Aggies. Wijnbelt earned the second hat trick of her career in as many games, and Clague shot three for three to post her first goals as an Aggie after redshirting last season. Clague also led the team with two assists and a steal. Emily Byrne added two steals, and freshman goalkeeper Sophia Noble notched six saves.
With just over a minute left to play, Clare McKeon found the cage for her first goal at UC Davis to seal the victory for the Aggies.
In the team's second game of the tournament, No. 10 UC Davis took on No. 20 San Jose State in a regional matchup that remained tied throughout the first three periods, until the Spartans broke away in the fourth. Robinson completed her hat trick exclusively on two power plays and a five meter penalty shot, and Kutt earned hers to give the Aggies their only lead in the game, late in the third period. Kutt also led the team with four steals, with Noble adding seven saves, for a combined total of 13 on the day.
