DAVIS, Calif. — In No. 10 UC Davis women's water polo's first game of the 2019 season, the Aggies got off to a hot start to hold Fresno Pacific to single digits in their 21-6 win on Friday at Schaal Aquatics Center.
Senior Annie Kutt opened her season in style, shooting four for four to earn a hat trick, tying her career high for single game scoring, in addition to her two steals. Also earning a hat trick was freshman Noelle Wijnbelt, who netted three goals in her very first collegiate water polo game.
Adding to the overall score were ten additional Aggies: Emily Byrne, Chloe Robinson, Julia Hartmann, and Emily Aikema scored two goals each, and Devin Holcomb, Kathleen Schafle, Audrey Taylor, Ariana Momen, Abbey Pfefferlen, and Marcela Portales had one apiece.
Hartmann and Aikema's two goals were their first at UC Davis after both redshirted the 2018 season. Other redshirt freshmen included Alyssa Lengtat and Clare McKeon, who finished the night with two steals and one steal, respectively.
All three UC Davis goalies saw action in the water, with freshmen Sophia Noble and Lauren Hooyer getting their first career saves as an Aggie. Noble lead the trio with seven saves and a steal, including a save on a five-meter penalty shot, while sophomore Caitlin Golding blocked five shots throughout the first two periods, and Hooyer, two.
At the end of the night UC Davis played a two period exhibition game against the Chinese National Team.
With Friday's win, the Aggies move to 1-0 to enter Saturday's Aggie Invite match-ups against Santa Clara at 10:30 AM, and No. 20 San Jose State at 3:30 PM. Live stats of the tournament can be found at the tournament website. (LINK)
