SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The women's cross country team was lead by consecutive top-10 finishes in the 6K to win the Capital Cross Challenge, while the men finished in 14th place in the 8K.

Redshirt freshman Eva Goodisson (7th, 21:35.9) was the first UC Davis finisher for the second week in a row, with junior Julia Lemak (8th, 21:36.8) hot on her heels, crossing just under a second behind for a pair of top-10 finishes — the first for the Aggies this season. Out of the field of over 250 runners, the top five UC Davis women all placed in the first 35 to combine for a team total of 76 points, 15 points ahead of second place Loyola Marymount.

"I'm really happy for the women's team. They learned a lot from their race last week in Oregon and were able to execute some great performances today," said head coach Emma Petersen. "Eva [Goodisson] managed to finish [as the] first runner on our team after coming through the field following a more conservative start. Julia [Lemak] was strong throughout the race and that paid off for her as she recorded a top ten finish. Mandy also had a phenomenal finish which helped to give us a 1 through 5 spread of 30 seconds. They will take a lot of confidence from today and we hope to build on this over the next month leading to our conference championship."

In the men's 8K race, senior Jordy Ceja repeated as the first UC Davis runner for the third time in as many meets this season. Ceja finished in 13th, with a time of 24:41.8, narrowly edging Big West Conference rival Michael Merchan (CSUN). Merchan has also won a Big West Conference Athlete of the Week award this season (9/17).

"Jordy [Ceja] had a solid day and continued to show progression from our season opener. I still think he has a lot more to come and today will fire him up for our next race. We didn't race 2 of our top 5 runners today so the team score isn't reflective of where we can be in the coming weeks. The men had the opportunity to run on the regional course in a more crowded race environment, something which a lot of our younger runners will benefit from. When we get back to full strength in two weeks we should be right where we want to be headed into the post season."

The Aggies are off next weekend, before returning to action Oct. 13 at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara.
