BREA, Calif. -- Juniors Sarah Anderson and Julia Lemak each crossed among the top 15 in the women's 5-kilometer race to lead UC Davis to a fifth-place finish at the 2018 Mark Covert Invitational cross country meet, hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
Anderson led the Aggies in 11th place with a time of 18:04.1, with Lemak placing 13th about two seconds later. Redshirt freshman Eva Goodisson (22nd), junior Haley Adel (26th) and junior Mandy Wainfan (46th) rounded out the UC Davis scorers in the 12-team, 122-runner field.
On the men's side, senior Jordy Ceja reached the finish chute in 23rd place at 25:26.8 as the Aggies took ninth out of 12 teams. Ryman Crone (44th), Adam Fragola (54th), Michael Wheeler (69th) and Bradley Needles (71st) accounted for the remaining UC Davis scoring finishes.
Cal Poly won both team races, leading a 1-2-3 Big West Conference sweep in the men's 8K, then edging Cal Baptist by a 56-57 margin on capture the women's 5K.
Saturday's meet represents the UC Davis debut of new head coach Emma Petersen. The Aggies return to action on September 21 at Oregon's Bill Dellinger Invitational.
