DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis football's preseason honor roll grew exponentially when the Phil Steele 2018 Preseason FCS All-American and All-Big Sky teams were announced by the online publication on Friday. When revealed, the Aggies collected a total of 10 awards.
Â
Senior wide receiver
Keelan Doss and junior tight end Wesley Preece each earned First Team All-American and First Team Big Sky All-Conference Team recognition. The duo also earned All-America accolades from STATS FCS and spots on the Preseason All-Big Sky Team earlier this summer.
Â
Doss, last year's consensus All-American, received one of Phil Steele's two top individual honors when he was named Big Sky Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Â
Responsible for final five awards was a group of Aggies who all earned spots on the All-Big Sky Third Team: junior quarterback
Jake Maier (offense), senior defensive lineman
Terrell Cloud, senior defensive back
Vincent White (defense), senior kick returner
Namane Modise and sophomore punt returner
Isaiah Thomas (special teams).
Â
Doss ended his junior season as the Big Sky's Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Big Sky honoree, thanks to a breakout season that included a trip to Frisco, Texas, as one of the three national finalists for the Walter Payton Award — the FCS' version of the Heisman Trophy.
Â
He also ended the 2017 campaign with 1,499 receiving yards, league-high averages of 136.3 receiving yards and 10.5 receptions per game. These figures were No. 1 in the nation among all FCS and FBS players when the Aggies' season concluded.
Â
Preece, a two-time conference All-Academic Team selection who was named to the 2017 All-Big Sky Conference Third Team, also enjoyed a breakout year of his own. Responsible for a team-high nine touchdowns and the second-highest number of points scored among all Aggies, he ended last season ranked No. 5 among all conference players in scoring (touchdowns) and recorded career-high stats in receptions (36), receiving yards (568), yards per catch (15.8) and TDs.
Â
In his first season as an Aggie, Maier ranked among the nation's top quarterbacks in the following categories: Completion Percentage (No. 2, .686), Completions per Game (No. 3, 27.82), Passing Yards per Game (No. 5, 333.5), Passing Yards (No. 6, 3,669) and Total Offense (No. 7, 331.6). The 2017 and '18 Walter Payton Watch List selection also led the league in passing efficiency (152.5) and ranked second in passing yards per game and total offense.
Like his teammate, Maier, Cloud enjoyed success throughout his first season at UC Davis. Of his 42 tackles, 7.5 were for a loss; he was also responsible for one-fifth of the team's sacks total when he finished with five, the second-highest among all Aggies and most among all defensive returners.
Â
By finishing with 49 tackles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and a team-high 13 breakups, White earned All-Big Sky recognition for the first time in his career in 2017. The team's recipient of the Bo Eason Award, presented to the program's most improved defensive player, ended last season with a league-high 1.86 breakups per game average — the 20th-highest individual mark in the nation — and finished with the second-highest PBU total among all league players.
Â
Modise etched his name in the program's records book when he became the second player in team history to return a kickoff 100 yards. Ranked second on the team in all-purpose yardage (1,004), he finished his inaugural season at UC Davis with 79 carries for 329 yards, 15 receptions for 141 yards and averaged 91.3 all-purpose yards per game.
Â
The 2017 season also featured an impressive debut for Thomas — his first season of action after redshirting the previous year. Not only did he play in all 11 games, he finished with 148 yards on 22 punt returns, and recorded 12 yards on his lone kickoff return. The versatile defensive back collected seven tackles and recorded his first career pass breakup in the Aggies' Big Sky home opener vs. North Dakota.
Â
After kicking-off its 100th season at San José State on Aug. 30, UC Davis will return to Aggie Stadium for its 2018 home opener on Sept. 8 when San Diego visits campus. Other teams squaring off against the Aggies on their turf this year are Idaho (Sept. 22), Idaho State (Oct. 13), Northern Arizona (Nov. 3) and Sacramento State (Nov. 17).
