DAVIS, Calif. —
Although the UC Davis women's water polo team conduced their home finale of the 2018 season with a tough loss against No. 3 California, the No. 8 Aggies now prepare for a competitive weekend of water polo as they enter into the Big West Conference Championships as the No. 2 seeds. This conference tournament will take place on Apr. 27-29, and will be hosted by UC Irvine at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

As released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association on Apr. 25, all six conference members rank among the nation's top 25: No. 5 Hawai'i, No. 8 UC Davis, No. 9 UC Irvine, No. 16 Long Beach State, No. 17 UC Santa Barbara, No. 19 CSUN.

The Aggies, who finished their regular season with an 18-10 overall record and a 3-2 Big West Conference record, will start their conference tournament campaign on Saturday (Apr. 28) at 3 p.m., where they will meet in the pool with either No. 3 UC Irvine (11-13, 3-2), or No. 6 CSUN (15-16, 0-5), depending on which team wins their matchup.

Whether UC Davis meets in the pool with the Anteaters or the Matadors, the level of competition the Aggies will face is high. According to the Big West Women's Water Polo weekly release from Apr. 25, CSUN's players show strong offensive statistics as they claim the conference's top marks in goals, assists, steals, and even saves, while UC Irvine's players show strong defensive play with high stats in both saves and save percentages.

Although the then-ranked No. 10 UC Davis saw a 9-8 upset win over the then-ranked No. 7 UC Irvine earlier this season, the Aggies have not been able to defeat the Anteaters in Big West tournament play our of their seven total encounters thus far.

Out of the 10 years that the Big West Conference has sponsored women's water polo, UC Irvine has been dominating the other conference members in most championship wins. UC Irvine saw a four-year winning streak from 2009 to 2012, and has added two more wins since then in 2014 and 2017, adding up to a total of six conference championship titles. Following after the Anteaters is Hawai'i with two conference championship wins, earned in 2013 and 2015, and UC Santa Barbara claimed a spot on the conference win list after their performance in the 2016.

The Big West Conference tournament champion will earn the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, hosted this year by USC from May 11-13.
