April 21, 2018 DAVIS, Calif. — Senior utility Paige Virgil led the No. 9 Aggies by scoring two of the six total goals; however, it was No. 3-ranked California that came away with the game victory at a final 15-6 score at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
Entering into the next competition week, the Aggies will carry an 18-10 overall record, while remaining put with a 3-2 Big West Conference record.
California's Dora Antal was the first player to mark the scoreboard in the dual match, while Virgil and sophomore attacker were the second and third scorers, respectively, to give UC Davis a temporary one-point lead halfway through the first quarter. The scoring went back and forth between the UC schools as the Golden Bears tied up the match 2-2. Virgil came through to score her second goal of the game, but again, California prevented the Aggies from maintaining the lead by scoring the next two goals to officially take away the home team's lead for the duration of the game.
In the third quarter, junior defender McKenna Hauss scored the fourth goal for UC Davis, while junior center Cassidy Smithson scored the fifth goal with 39 seconds left on the clock, but by the end of the quarter, the visiting team had widened the score's gap by five points.
Unfortunately, the Golden Bears continued on to score five more goals over the Aggies in the concluding quarter, while UC Davis's senior attacker Heather Johnson was the only scorer for her team, officially concluding the dual at a 14-6 California victory.
The UC Davis women's water polo team returns to action next weekend for the Big West Conference Championships, which will be hosted by UC Irvine from Apr. 27-29.
