No. 10 Aggies defeat Azusa Pacific, 18-3

March 9, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore utility Chloe Robinson and senior attacker Sammy Preston led the Aggies with four goals and three goals, respectively, to help their team to an 18-3 victory over Azusa Pacific's team at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.

After this competition weekend, the Aggies bump their wins to 15 for the 2018 season.

Senior attacker Heather Johnson and senior utility Paige Virgil scored the first two points of the game, while sophomore attacker Kathleen Schafle, senior center Jill Bushman, and Robinson rounded out the first quarter with one goal apiece, bringing the Aggies' score to five.

The Aggies built off their four-point lead over the Cougars in the second quarter as the home team went on to score four goals, while their opponents were unable to find an opportunity to score. Preston scored the first of four goals during the second quarter, followed by Virgil as she collected her second goal of the game at the three-minute mark. Junior Attacker Marcela Portales contributed to the team score shortly after Virgil, while senior center Greta Kohlmoos brought the score to nine prior to the conclusion of the quarter.

Going into the second half of the game, the Aggies continued to increase the gap between the visiting team, as UC Davis went on to score nine more goals over the duration of the game, while Azusa Pacific only scored two more goals.

Starting off the scoring for the third quarter was sophomore attacker Ariana Momen; however, the Cougar's Britni Tisdale pushed through to score a goal for the team. The Aggies then responded back by getting the next four game goals, the first two coming from Prestons' efforts in getting back-to-back goals, while Robinson repeated her teammate by getting her own set of back-to-back goals, bringing the UC Davis score to 14.

Although UC Davis held a 11-point lead over Azusa Pacific going into the final quarter of the match, the Aggies refused to slow down as they maintained a high level of both offensive and defensive play. Portales scored the first of four fourth-quarter Aggie goals, while freshman attacker Emily Aikema, Robinson, and Momen scored the next three game goals to conclude the match at a 18-3 UC Davis victory.

Aside from goals scored, sophomore goalie Caitlin Golding prevented the Cougars from with her 15 saves in the first three quarters of the game, while freshman goalie Cleopatra Constantin collected three saves of her own in the final quarter of the game.

The UC Davis women's water polo team returns to action next weekend as they welcome Big West Conference school Long Beach State to the Schaal Aquatics Center for their third home match in-a-row.
