March 28, 2018

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Freshman attacker Anna Hofgard scored a career-high two goals off the bench while sophomore Sorana Larson added a goal and an assist, but UC Davis allowed 4-0 starts to each half in falling to No. 4-ranked James Madison in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Sentara Park Wednesday afternoon.

The Aggies even their record to 4-4. The Dukes improve to 9-1 for the year.

Senior midfielder Kelsey DeJesus and junior midfielder Taylor Cuenin also scored goals for UC Davis. Cuenin and defender Natalie Garces each added a pair of caused turnovers, sophomore Kate Graham led her team with four ground balls, while freshman Mar Alvear posted a game-high six draw controls.

Four Dukes scored two goals apiece: Haley Warden, Katie Checkosky, Daria Lucchesi and Halle Duenkel. Warden also had three draw controls and a game-best four steals for JMU, which led 11-3 at the halftime break.

James Madison scored four unanswered goals before UC Davis got on the board with a Larson eight-meter goal in the 11th minute. Hanna Haven then assisted two goals in another 4-0 run for the Dukes, boosting the lead to 8-1. Cuenin converted a free-position shot and Larson assisted DeJesus to cut the margin to 8-3, but that proved to be the smallest deficit of the contest.

JMU scored three straight to end the first half before piling up four straight in the first 16 minutes after the break, invoking the 10-goal running clock. Alvear scored both of her goals down the final stretch to bring the score to its final 15-5.

The Dukes dominated the game in shots (34-14), clears (19-for-22 to 16-for-21), turnovers (15-26) and caused turnovers (15-8). The two teams matched up 11-11 on the draw, with Alvear leading all players.
