DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis senior attacker Sammy Preston led the Aggies for the second time in as many weeks with a hat trick, highlighting the No. 10 Aggies' 8-7 victory over No. 15 Long Beach State at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
After the Big West Conference win, UC Davis is now 16-7 for the 2018 season.
The 49ers were the first team to mark the scoreboard; however, Preston responded directly after with back-to-back goals within two minutes left of the first quarter to give her team a one-point edge entering the second quarter of the game.
In the second quarter, each team only had one goal, with Raney Remme scoring for Long Beach State's team, while UC Davis junior defender McKenna Hauss marked the board to maintain the Aggies' one-point lead.
Entering into the second half of the match, senior center Greta Kohlmoos temporarily brought their lead to two after scoring a goal within the first minute of the quarter; however, Remme pushed through to close the gap with a goal just 12 seconds after Kohlmoos.
The 49ers continued to narrow the score as they went on to tie the game 6-6 entering the final quarter of the match, despite Kohlmoos's and Preston's efforts in getting one goal apiece.
Long Beach State found an opportunity to take the lead with a temporary 7-6 score in the final quarter after Tori Morrissey scored a goal for the 49ers; however, it was short-lived as the home team bumped up both their defense and offense to score two goals, concluding the game at a final 8-7 Aggie victory. The first UC Davis goal came from senior utility Paige Virgil, while junior utility Annie Kutt rounded out the dual with a goal of her own at the minute mark.
The UC Davis women's water polo team will have one week off from competition play before returning to action on Mar. 31 as they make a trip across the Pacific Ocean to play fellow Big West Conference university Hawai'i.
