PEORIA, Ariz. - UC Davis entered Monday's final round at the Westbrook Spring Invitational with a 4-over team score, enjoyed one of the biggest jumps on the team leaderboard by finishing the tournament with a 3-under result, and climbed one spot to 11th overall among a field loaded with top-ranked talent.
Samantha Hutchison earned the fourth-lowest individual score of the day by finishing with a 68, her best round of the weekend. By doing so, the junior sociology major continued an outstanding spring season by posting her sixth straight under-par score, and finished tied for sixth at 7-under.
From the start of the tournament until it ended, no individual player enjoyed as dramatic an improvement from the opening round through the final hole of the tournament than freshman psychology major Hannah Sun. Following her first round on the Vistas Course on Sunday, she improved by five shots, and ended her day with a 74. When she resumed play on Monday, she improved another five shots and finished the round with a 3-under result.
In addition to recording birdies in two of her first three holes, she ended the day strong by collecting another two birdies on holes 17 and 18. In between, she shot par on 12 consecutive holes in her lowest 18-hole score of the season.
The only Aggie who collected more birdies throughout the third round was Hutchison, who finished under par on holes two, five, and three of her last five played (13, 14 and 17).
By shooting 71, sophomore economics major Christine Danielsson earned the Aggies' other under-par score, and finished tied for 13th at 4-under. Sophomore undeclared major Yoonhee Kim posted another round of 73 to finish tied for 52nd at 4-over, and sophomore psychology major Rei Nakatani finished 76th at 10-over.
Ohio State's Jaclyn Lee won the individual championship with a 19-under finish; she and her Buckeye teammates fell one shot shy of winning the team title, collected by Oklahoma and its 25-under result.
UC Davis will experience a quick turnaround since its next tournament will commence on Monday March 5. However, this event is the only local one on the Aggies' spring slate, and will take place at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., when San Francisco and San José State host the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate.
