Feb. 14, 2018

MPSF Championships - Day 1 Complete Results

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - A fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay and sixth-place finish in the 800 free relay ranked the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team tied for 5th with BYU at 54 points, as the Aggies closed out day one of the 2018 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif on Wednesday.

Hawai'i leads the pack with 74 points after placing second in the 200 medley relay and winning the 800 free relay with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 7:07.30--a new pool record and MPSF meet record. On the heels of Hawai'i with 72 points is UC Santa Barbara, which won the 200 medley relay and finished third in the 800 free relay. San Diego is in third after finishing fourth and second, respectively, and holds a two-point lead over Pacific which finished third and fourth, respectively, to rank fourth on the day.

Junior Solie Laughlin helped the Aggies get off to a strong start in the 200 medley relay, trailing the leading Tigers by just over one-tenth of a second after the backstroke leg, but the Gauchos answered back with the fastest breaststroke and freestyle times of the night to out-touch Hawai'i with a time of 1:39.30. The quartet of Solie Laughlin, Kristin Schumann, Cora McClelland, and Ali Sena put together the fastest time by the Aggies this season at 1:42.84.

Competing in the 800 free relay for just the third time this season, the Aggies cut over 14 seconds off their fastest performance of the year, with the team of Courtney Schultz, Nina Gonzalez, Iris Brand, and Jamie Pincin touching sixth overall with a time of 7:24.69. Schultz' lead-off 200 free time of 1:50.92 was also the fastest by any Aggie swimmer this season.

Day two of the swimming competition will get underway at 10 a.m. tomorrow with prelims for the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free followed by finals in those events plus the 200 free relay beginning at 6 p.m. Over at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, prelims for the women's 1-meter program will begin at 11 a.m. with finals starting at 1:30 p.m.
