RIVERSIDE, Calif. - As Tuesday's final round at the Battle at the Rock progressed, two teams separated themselves from the other 12 teams that visited the Oak Quarry Golf Club this week: UC Davis and Hawai'i. At one point, only one stroke separated these two Big West squads until the Aggies pulled away and won the team championship by eight strokes.
By competing in one of the toughest fall schedules, head coach Anna Temple's decision paid immediate dividends in the team's first spring event, now that it is bringing hardware back to campus thanks to a 10-over (874) score. Hawai'i finished second by shooting 18-over (882) with UC Riverside, the tournament's host, and Stetson finishing third at 22-over (886).
In addition to wining its first team title of the year, junior sociology major Samantha Hutchison will bring home a trophy of her own after winning an individual championship, thanks to a 2-under 70 score posted on the event's final day.
Hutchison finished her week in Riverside with a 5-under 211.
For the second time in as many days, Hutchison recorded an eagle. During yesterday's action, this took place with her ace; Tuesday's took place on the 353-yard par 4. On that hole, a 1-over turned into a 1-under individual score, and fueled a back nine that saw her remain under par throughout the rest of the tournament.
During a week that included a hole-in-one from Hutchison, freshman psychology major Hannah Sun's lowest individual round and the team's lowest round of the season on Monday, all five members of the Aggies' lineup finished the Battle at the Rock with top 25 individual scores.
Highlighted by her birdie on hole 11, sophomore managerial economics major Christine Danielsson ended the tournament with a 3-over final round to finish in 10th with a 220 overall score. Thanks to five birdies, which included four throughout her first eight holes, Sun posted a 3-over round as well, carded a 222 for the week and finished 19th. Sophomore psychology major Rei Nakatani and sophomore undeclared major Yoonhee Kim shot 3-over and 4-over on Tuesday, finished 22nd and 25th with respective cumulative scores of 223 and 224.
Throughout the Battle at the Rock, no team recorded more pars (170), eagles (3), posted a lower average on par 4s (4.12) and par 5s (4.90) than UC Davis. With its consistent play from the tournament's opening holes, the Aggies' entire lineup truly dominated the field this week.
UC Davis will have a bit of time to savor these results because it will not return to action until Feb. 25 when it heads to The Vistas Course at Westbrook Village Golf Club in Peoria, Ariz., to compete in The Westbrook Spring Invitational.
