Aggies sit atop leaderboard entering final day

Feb. 12, 2018

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Led by junior sociology major Samantha Hutchison and her 3-under individual score, which included a hole-in-one on No. 14 during Monday's second round at the Battle at the Rock, hosted by UC Riverside at the Oak Quarry Golf Club, UC Davis sits atop the leaderboard in first place (+3, 579), six shots ahead of Hawai'i (+9, 585) and eight shots in front of the tournament's host (+11, 587) through the first 36 holes of the Aggies' inaugural spring event.

Hutchison's eagle, one of two earned by UC Davis throughout the event's opening day, helped her finish Monday's action as one of seven players under par. She and two other Big West golfers trail Hana Furuichi, who holds a one-stroke individual edge.

Sophomore psychology major Rei Nakatani recorded the other eagle, also taking place during the second round on the par-5 second hole.

Hutchison earned her ace on the 169-yard, par-3 14th hole.

It was a complete team effort that made UC Davis the team to beat from the start of competition, throughout the entire day, with all five individual scores finishing among the top 18. Sophomore managerial economics major Christine Danielsson finished tied for ninth with a 1-over 145; freshman psychology major Hannah Sun is 14th with a 4-over 147; Nakatani and sophomore undeclared major Yoonhee Kim are tied for 18th with 4-over 148s.

In addition to UC Davis, Stetson was the only team to showcase two top-10 individual scores. Unlike the Aggies, who boast another three top marks, the Hatters' finished tied for 43rd, 49th and 79th with their next three scores.

No team fared better on par 3s than UC Davis; of the 14 teams competing, it was the only one to record an even score on these holes. Not only did the Aggies finish a collective 9-under on par 5s, they recorded more pars (118) than any other team.

UC Riverside recorded 110 pars throughout the first 36 holes, eight fewer than the Aggies even though it competed on its home course, which also served as the site of last season's Big West Championship.

Through 18 holes, the Aggies were one of two teams - UC Riverside was the other - who held an under-par team score. Both were 1-under and shot 287.

Unlike the host Highlanders, who dropped to third after shooting a plus-12 throughout its following 18 holes, the Aggies enjoyed consistent play from everyone in their lineup and posted the lowest team score of the second round as well (+6).
