DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis displayed its doubles dominance, moving on to the semifinals at both the Kramer Classic in Los Angeles, and the Bulldog Classic in Fresno.
At the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, David Goulak was victorious in his round of 16 match, posting a straight set win over BYU's Matthew Pearce to move on to Saturday's quarterfinal against the No. 1 seed from UCLA, Keegan Smith. Ivan Thamma, who also played in the round of 16, dropped his match to the No. 5 seed from UCLA, Eric Hahn, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, Dariush Jalali and Daniel Landa dropped the pro-set to the No. 2 seeds from USC 8-3, while Goulak and Thamma won both rounds to advance to the semifinals, not losing more than four games in either match. The duo has now won eight of their last nine matches together, and are on a six-match winning streak.
In Fresno, Chethan Swanson and Alex Scemanenco won their first round of doubles in the Flight A draw, defeating Patrick Pech and Cem Erturk from host school Fresno State 8-3 to move on to the semifinal round Saturday at 8:30 AM. In singles, Swanson put up a tough first set against San Francisco's Nitzan Ricklis in the A flight before falling 7-6(5), 6-3. In the B flight, Arjith Jayaraman battled against Nevada's Delmas N'tcha in three sets, but was unable to close out the match, falling 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). Due to the compass draw format of this tournament, each player is guaranteed four singles matches and three doubles matches. Saturday will start with one round of doubles at 8:30 AM, followed by two rounds of singles.
