OXFORD, Ohio — Redshirt junior
Mia Facey scored 36 individual points on the day to lead all Aggies after finishing 6th overall in the 200 IM and taking home top honors in the 50 free with a career best time of 23.31—a time that also ranks eighth in the all-time UC Davis record books. Senior
Solie Laughlin touched first overall in the 200 IM with a winning time of 2:00.91, while freshman
Mia Motekaitis posted a season-best in the 500 free to finish third on the night as the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team finished day one of the 25th-annual Miami Invite in second-place as a team.
In addition to earning a pair of "A" final second swims, Facey also helped the Aggies to a second-place finish as the anchor for the 200 free relay with a season-best time of 1:32.97.
UC Davis closed out day one of the 25th-annual Miami Invite in second place as a team with 286 points. The Aggies finished ahead of Cincinnati (279), Ball State (130) and Milwaukee (123), while the host Redhawks paced the field with 375 points.
UC Davis opened the second session of the day with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay final thanks to a season-best time of 1:32.97 posted by the team of
Jamie Pincin, Motekaitis,
Mia Cunnan, and Facey.
In the 500 free, Motekaitis shaved nearly three seconds off her third-place prelim time of 4:57.48 en route to a podium finish in the final with a season-best time of 4:54.81—the eighth-fastest time by an Aggie in program history in the event. Senior
Nina Gonzalez, who also earned a spot in the championship final, finished seventh overall with a season-best time of 4:59.05, while junior
Olivia Smith placed fourth in the "B" final (5:01.76) ahead of sophomore
Kathryn Bockman who finished 15th overall with a career-best 5:05.49.
The Aggies were well-represented in the "A" final of the 200 IM with four swimmers earning a spot in the championship. Laughlin, who also touched first overall in the prelims, finished less than a second shy of the NCAA "B" standard with a season-best time of 2:00.91. After touching fourth in the prelims with a career-best time of 2:03.58, Leacox finished fifth on the day ahead of Facey in sixth (2:04.55) and
Eva Chung in ninth (2:07.36). Junior
Kristin Schumann also finished second in the "B" final with a season-best time of 2:05.90.
After posting a career-best time of 23.31 in the prelims of the 50 free, Facey went on to touch first overall in the championship final. Pincin improved two spots to finish sixth on the day with a time of 23.75, while Cunnan touched fourth overall in the "B" final. Junior
Cora McClelland, who claimed a spot in the "C" final after winning a three-person swim-off with a career-best time of 24.05, also tied for 22nd overall.
Closing out the night at the Miami Invite was the quartet of Laughlin, Schumann, McClelland, and Pincin who touched second overall in the 400 medley relay with a season-best time of 3:42.98.
On the boards, the Aggies made their first appearance of the season in the platform event led by freshman
Taylor Hornberger who finished ninth on the day with a score of 181.80. Fellow freshman
Londen Christensen finished 11th (173.45) ahead of senior
Inessa Toropov in 12th (172.45) and sophomore
Katie Truong in 14th (158.70).
Competition is slated to resume tomorrow (Nov. 30) beginning at 10 a.m.CST with prelims in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, and 100 back, followed by finals in those events in addition to the 200 medley and 800 free relays, beginning at 6 p.m. CST.
