ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior communications major TJ Shorts II's made free throw, with 17 seconds remaining in Saturday's neutral-site game in Arlington, Texas, pushed UC Davis' overtime lead to three, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi witnessed the Aggies' trademark defense firsthand since that cushion was all they needed to outlast the Islanders, 57-54, in the first of back-to-back games, in as many days, during their Texas road trip.

UC Davis will return to College Park Center to face UT Arlington, on its own floor, Sunday morning at 10 a.m. before returning to Davis. It will enter that true road matchup with a 1-3 record. The Islanders, who opened the season with three wins in their first four games, fall to 3-2 in the second all-time meeting between these teams.

"I like the fight this team showed the last two games. Today, we were down by nine and guys just continued to battle and make plays, and made those plays thanks to our defensive effort. When you hold teams to 35 percent shooting, and 23 percent from three, those figures will help you win some games," said head coach Jim Les

Senior communication Siler Schneider led a quartet of Aggie double-digit scorers with 13 points, senior psychology major AJ John hit three from distance, including the game-tying three with 20 seconds remaining to even the score at 51 apiece, and two at the free throw line, to finish with a season-high 11 points. Shorts II and junior economics major Joe Mooney each finished with 10 points.

UC Davis entered this game ranked No. 2 in the nation at the free throw line with its .851 percentage, and it made TAMUCC pay dearly at the stripe throughout the entire afternoon by hitting 13 of 16 attempts.

Down by nine early in the second half, the Aggies caught fire and scored 12 of the following 14 points, throughout a 6:02 timespan, to take a 42-40 lead with 6:32 left in regulation.

Even though the Islanders had a shot to break that 51-51 tie at the end of regulation, Mooney's block of Kareem South's shot, pushed the game into overtime.

The Islanders scored the first point of the extra session by hitting one of two at the line, but once Schneider hit a three 18 seconds later, they never held a lead for the rest of the game.

"They shot 1-for-9 in overtime ... our guys not only outrebounded them, but they executed with ferocity and intensity. They made plays, chased long rebounds down and got their hands on the ball," said Les.

"We will be ready, this group is tough and resilient. We will get our legs underneath us and be ready to go," Les added, regarding the quick turnaround from Saturday's game to Sunday's 10 a.m. PT/12 p.m. CT matchup against host UT Arlington.
