St. Mary's Fall Invite
Oct. 26-28, 2018
MORAGA, Calif. — David Goulak and Ivan Thamma claimed the Men's A doubles crown on day three of the St. Mary's Fall Invite, and freshman Alex Scemanenco reached the final of the Men's B singles draw.
Goulak and Thamma defeated Cal Poly's Dominic Bechard and Karapet Vardanyan 8-6 in the final of the tournament's top doubles flight to win the title. The duo moves to 6-1 in the fall season after just two tournaments. In the Men's B doubles final, Mitchell Iwahiro and Scemanenco took on St. Mary's Abhishek Bastola and David Abfalter, but were unable to overcome the challenge, falling 8-4.
Scemanenco continued his run in the main draw of the Men's B singles, winning his semifinal match over Louis Chabut (Sacramento State) 7-5, 6-3. He moved on to the final round, battling against Vardanyan, but fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to the Cal Poly freshman.
In extra matches, Chethan Swanson and Daniel Landa defeated Roman Shenkiryk and Andrew Whitehouse, a 2018 All-Big West Honorable Mention doubles team, 8-3. Landa went on to play two singles matches, and went the distance in both, splitting the result with a win over Holy Names and a loss to Fresno State. Also playing extra singles matches were Swanson, Thamma, and Dariush Jalali, but all three fell in close matches.
The Aggies will have a quick turnaround, with half the team traveling to Los Angeles to compete in the Kramer Classic beginning on Thursday, Nov. 1, and the other half will play in Fresno at the Fresno State Bulldog Invite, starting Nov. 2.
