USAFA, Colo. - Senior Spencer Galli tied his career high of four goals while four other Aggies each added three, helping 10th-ranked UC Davis to a 21-13 win over 19th-ranked U.S. Air Force Academy in Western Water Polo Association men's action at Cadet Natatorium Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in conference. The Falcons dip to 2-9 for the year and open at 0-1 in WWPA play. The 34 total goals is also the most in UC Davis history since a 20-15 victory over Santa Clara back in November of 1996.
Ido Goldschmidt, Colter Knight, Holden Tamblyn and Marcus Anderson each chipped in three-goal performances for UC Davis. Anderson and Goldschmidt also had three assists, with the latter adding a game-best five steals. The Aggies shot .553 overall (21-for-38) and converted 8 of 12 exclusion opportunities.
Senior Riley Thomas netted seven goals to lead USAFA, while Justin Harrison contributed three more.
UC Davis never trailed in the contest, storming to a 5-1 start during the first 5:11 of play. Goldschmidt completed his hat trick during that run, which became a 7-3 lead at the quarter break and a 12-7 halftime edge. The Aggies went on another 5-1 run to start the second half before allowing the Falcons to net four of the next five goals through the 6:31 mark of the fourth. Thomas had three straight goals in that stretch, which brought Air Force to within an 18-12 deficit.
Anderson assisted Galli's fourth goal then netted his own score in the final quarter to keep UC Davis well out in front for the remainder of the contest.
The Aggies take a week off from official competition, hosting their alumni game on October 7. They return to conference action with back-to-back home games against Santa Clara and Concordia on October 14 and 15.
