May 23, 2017 DAVIS, Calif. - Former Saint Louis student-athlete Matt Neufeld has joined UC Davis basketball, as announced by head coach Jim Les on Tuesday. The 6-foot-11 junior post player completes the Aggies' incoming class, and will join program newcomers Logan Strom, TJ Shorts II, Gio Nelson, Delveion Jackson, Colin Russell and Stefan Gonzalez when the entire 2017-18 team reports for preseason workouts this summer.
"Matt brings size, skill, and a mature basketball IQ to our program. He runs the floor well and has the ability to play around the basket as well as out on the floor. We can't wait to work with him during his sit-out year, there is no doubt that his best basketball is ahead of him," said Les.
Before he began his college career, Neufeld represented Canada's U-19 National Team in the 2015 FIBA World Championships, where he competed in all seven contests, averaged 5.1 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game. Once he arrived to Saint Louis, he played in 53 games throughout his two seasons with the Billikens before heading to Davis.
Neufeld attended prep school at Sunrise Christian Academy (Wichita, Kan.) after an outstanding career at Lambrick Park High School, located in his hometown of Victoria, British Columbia. As a senior, he averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds per game, led the Lions to a 30-9 overall record and ended the season with a provincial championship.
During his high school years, Neufeld also averaged nearly 20 ppg and 10 rpg with his club team, Drive Basketball.
Per NCAA rules, he will sit out the 2017-18 season before returning to action with two years of eligibility remaining.
