April 23, 2017 RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Senior Paige Lee fired a 1-under-par 71 to take part in a four-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard, leading UC Davis after the first round of action at the Big West Conference women's golf championship, hosted by UC Riverside at the Oak Quarry Golf Club. The Aggies are in third place in the team race with a 297 total, one stroke behind the host Highlanders and eight back from Cal Poly.
Lee birdied the ninth, 11th and 14th with seven pars down the final stretch to maintain a spot among the top five in the medalist standings. Freshman
Rei Nakatani carded an even-par 35 on the front nine then shot 2-over-par on the back to close Sunday's round with a 74, tied for 12th overall. Another freshman,
Christine Danielsson finished one stroke behind Nakatani in a tie for 16th, while sophomore
Samantha Hutchison shot a 77 to finish the first round in a tie for 22nd. Freshman
Yoonhee Kim rounded out the UC Davis lineup with a 78, tied for 24th for the tourney. UC Riverside Jakeishya Le leads the individual standings at 2-under 70, although she enjoyed an 11-hole stretch in which she rose from 1-over to 6-under. Two Cal Poly players, Desiree Gillapsy and Jamie Binns, share second place with UC Davis' Lee, helping the Mustangs to their 1-over 289 team score. The eight-team Big West tournament, held at the par-72, 6,150-yard course, runs through Tuesday.
