April 15, 2017 IRVINE, Calif. - Juniors Greta Kohlmoos and Paige Virgil each netted goals but came up well shy in an 8-2 loss to UC Irvine in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Anteater Pool Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 14-16 for the year and close out league play at 2-3. The Anteaters, now winners of 10 straight, improve to 19-6 overall and remain unbeaten in Big West action at 4-0. Kohlmoos converted a 6-on-5 opportunity with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter while Virgil scored in transition in the final seconds of the third. Kohlmoos' goal kept the score at 2-1 after the opening frame but UCI poured in four unanswered in the second quarter to extend its lead to 6-1 at halftime, then made it eight straight with goals at 5:21 and 2:18 in the third. Junior utility Mary Brooks and senior defender Gabby Pierandozzi each scored two goals for the 'Eaters, who also benefitted from a pair of five-meter penalty goals. Avery Dotterer coming up with 10 saves. UC Davis managed just 2 of 28, with Anteater fifth-year Annika Nelson tallying 12 stops. The Aggies return home to host their Alumnae game as part of Saturday's Picnic Day slate, then hosts Santa Clara for a noon non-conference game on Sunday. UC Davis will also host the Big West Conference championship from April 28-30.
