Offense erupts to lift Aggies past Nittany Lions, 10-2

Box Score March 8, 2017

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Jacob Thomas and Ryan Hooper each hit home runs to help power the offense to a season-high run total, while sophomore right-hander Blake Hannah and two relievers held visiting Penn State to just two runs, helping UC Davis snap a five-game losing streak with a 10-2 win over the Nittany Lions on Wednesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs on the diamond, the Aggies improved to 4-7 overall on the season, winning for the first time since taking the series finale from Utah Valley on Feb. 26. Penn State fell to 4-7 overall with the loss.

Hannah (1-0), making his first start since Feb. 28 of last season against Utah Valley, allowed just one run on three hits over four innings of work and striking out a pair. Junior Connor Loar struck out three in 3.2 innings, allowing a run on five hits in relief, before freshman Andres Lara closed out the game with a strike out in 1.1 innings of scoreless, hitless, relief.

Thomas recorded his fourth three-hit game of the season, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI -- all of the latter coming on his second home run of the season down the left field line in the fourth inning. Hooper added a solo shot -- also his second of the season -- in the seventh to cap the scoring.

A double by Cameron Briggs, who also walked and scored twice, followed a single by Olson for the first run of the game and Hooper made it a two-run game with an RBI ground ball two batters later for a 2-0 advantage. A double by Ryan Anderson and a two-run double by Guillermo Salazar in the third pushed the lead out to 5-0 and the rout was on.

Penn State pulled a run back on a double by Braxton Giavedoni, who finished 2-for-4, in the fourth and the Nittany Lions added another single run in the fifth on a ground out by Mason Nadeau, but Thomas' blast put the game out of reach as the Aggies tacked on another thanks to a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth before Hooper's shot just cleared the wall in left for the final 10-2 tally.

Hooper finished with his second multi-hit game of the season, ending the day 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, as seven of the nine starters recorded at least one hit on the afternoon.

Starter Taylor Lehman (0-3) suffered the loss for Penn State, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings of work -- the first of seven Nittany Lion pitchers on the day.

UC Davis continues its season-long five-game homestand with a three-game series against UConn at Dobbins Stadium. The two teams open on Friday (March 10) at 2 p.m., with first pitch scheduled at 1 p.m. on both Saturday (March 11) and Sunday (March 12).
