Aggies fall to Top 10 foes at Wolverine Invite

March 4, 2017

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Junior center Greta Kohlmoos scored four total goals as No. 13 UC Davis lost by a 13-7 final to No. 7 host Michigan, then 14-8 to No. 9 Pacific in Saturday's portion of the Wolverine Invitational women's water polo tournament at Canham Natatorium. Kohlmoos scored twice in each contest.

The Aggies snap their five-game winning streak, moving to 9-13 for the year.

Kohlmoos and sophomore Annie Kutt scored two goals each in the afternoon matchup against the Tigers. Kohlmoos and senior Hannah Harvey propelled UC Davis to a 2-0 lead within the first 74 seconds after the opening sprint. However, Pacific responded with three unanswered to hold a 3-2 edge after the first quarter. Kutt assisted sophomore McKenna Hauss on an equalizer early in the second, then scored a goal of her own to make it 4-4 with 6:23 left. Yet again, the Tigers went on a 3-0 run to reclaim the lead. Kohlmoos and Pacific freshman Mariana Duarte traded goals late in the half as the Aggies trailed at the half by an 8-5 margin.

The Tigers maintained at least a two-goal edge the rest of the way. In Saturday's tournament opener, Kohlmoos and Paige Virgil each scored two goals in the 13-7 loss to the host Wolverines. Virgil struck first with her goal in the opening possession, but UM responded with three straight to take a 3-1 lead through the first period.

Senior Danielle Johnson scored two goals in that Wolverine run, then finished her hat trick on a power play early in the second to make it 4-1. Kohlmoos netted her first goal on the next possession, but the Aggies trailed, 6-2, at halftime. Virgil converted a 6-on-5 chance to open the third quarter then assisted Kohlmoos on a goal midway through the frame. Harvey connected with 1:09 remaining, then Hauss buried an outside shot early in the fourth quarter to bring UC Davis to within a 9-6 deficit. However, UM poured in four straight goals to pull away to the victory.

The Wolverine Invite concludes on Sunday. The Aggies take on Bucknell at 7:20 a.m. Pacific, then wraps up the tourney against No. 18 Hartwick at 10:50.
