DAVIS, Calif. -- Making its fifth postseason appearance in 10 seasons as a Division I program, the UC Davis women's basketball team will take on the University of Utah in the first round of the 20th annual Women's National Invitational Tournament on Friday (March 17), as the field of 64 teams was announced on Monday night.

The two teams will tip off at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, at a time to be announced on Tuesday (March 14). The winner will meet either Colorado State or Saint Mary's in the second round as the Rams and Gaels meet in Fort Collins, Colo. on Thursday (March 16).

Complete tournament information is available online at www.WomensNIT.com.

With the NCAA Tournament field announced earlier in the day, the Aggies have faced seven teams that have advanced to the postseason. National No. 2 seeds Oregon State and Stanford, along with No. 14 Montana State and No. 15 Long Beach State, were selected to the NCAA field of 64, while the WNIT field features UCF, which received the American Athletic Conference's automatic berth, along with at-large selections Jacksonville (Atlantic Sun) and Saint Mary's (West Coast).

The regular season Big West Conference champions, the Aggies enter their first postseason appearance since a WNIT berth in 2012 with a 23-7 overall record and a 14-2 mark in league play, falling in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

This is the program's fourth WNIT berth, but UC Davis is still searching for its first win after falling at Gonzaga in its inaugural Division I season in 2008, at California in 2010, and at Oregon State in 2012. The Aggies also clinched the Big West Tournament title and made their first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 2011, facing off against Bay Area rival Stanford in the first round.

Led by second-year head coach Lynne Roberts, who was at the helm of former Big West Conference rival Pacific for nine seasons, Utah enters the postseason with a 16-14 overall record and a 5-13 mark in the difficult Pacific-12 Conference that qualified seven teams to the NCAA Tournament and three more to the WNIT field. The Utes enter the postseason on a two-game losing streak after falling to Washington in their regular season finale, and dropping an 18-point decision to Arizona State in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

Six-foot-six junior forward Emily Potter leads a trio of Utah scorers in double figures, averaging 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while shooting a shade under 52 percent from the field and blocking a league-high 87 shots. She earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors and was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team.

Junior wing Malia Nawahine (10.5 ppg) and senior wing Paige Crozon (10.1 ppg) are also in double figures and stand 1-2 in three-point percentage on the team.

The Aggies and the Utes had four opponents in common this season, with Utah finishing 0-2 against conference rivals Oregon State and Stanford, while posting wins in non-conference affairs against Saint Mary's and Montana State.

Friday's meeting will mark only the second meeting between the two programs -- the last coming on Dec. 29, 2015, in Salt Lake City, with the Utes posting an, 88-58, victory.
