FULLERTON, Calif. - Clutch plays on defense, and timely baskets scored as quickly as possible in Saturday's Big West Conference game at Titan Gym helped UC Davis cut an 11-point deficit to five, with a 41-second timespan, and 54 ticks still left in regulation. But Cal State Fullerton ended the game by hitting six free throws to defeat UC Davis, 79-72.
By finishing with a team-high 20 points, Brynton Lemar needs just five more to notch 1,000 for his career and become the 22nd Aggie to reach this milestone.
As has been the case since UC Davis' Feb. 4 road game at UC Santa Barbara, Siler Schneider scored double figures, recording all but three of his 18 points against the Titans in the second half. Throughout his team's last five games, the sophomore guard is averaging 16.6 points per game, shooting .452 overall and .385 from three.
Chima Moneke ended his evening with 11 points and 11 rebounds to collect his 10th double-double and 13th double-figure rebound total of the season - both league-high figures.
UC Davis will open a season-high three-game homestand on Thursday, vs. CSUN, and return to the Pavilion with a 16-11 overall and 8-4 Big West record. Cal State Fullerton ends its weekend with records of 13-12 and 7-5.
Trailing 33-25 at the break, UC Davis opened the second half on an 11-4 run, and pulled within one at 37-36. Following that Aggie scoring ouyburst, Cal State Fullerton responded by scoring nine of the following 11 points to push its lead to nine.
As the game progressed, baskets were traded by both teams until Tre Coggins hit a three, with 1:35 remaining, to push the Titans' lead to 11. A layup and three-pointer from Lemar, followed by five straight points from Schneider - scored on a three-point play and layup, turned a double-digit deficit into a two-possession game in the final minute.
By converting on 19 of 29 free throw attempts in the second half, with a vast majority taking place in the final minutes of the game, Cal State Fullerton was able to hang on to its lead, escape with a win and split the seasons series.
FOX Sports Prime Ticket broadcasted Saturday's matchup, the second national broadcast in as many games, and one of four taking place for UC Davis within the final six games of the regular season.
