DAVIS, Calif. - In his debut season at UC Davis, Chima Moneke caught the nation's attention with his phenomenal performance on the court for the Aggies. As a junior, the Big West Conference's 2016-17 rebound champion averaged 14.6 points per game, a league-high 9.5 boards per game, shot .527 from the floor, led all league players in field goals made (192), defensive rebounds (249), defensive rebounds per game (6.9), total rebounds (341), blocks (51) and blocks per game (1.4) and enjoyed a phenomenal month of March, thanks to his stellar play throughout the Big West Conference Tournament and the following two games at the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his all-district selection, Moneke also collected Newcomer of the Year, All-Tournament Team and all-conference first team honors from the Big West Conference last year, which is why he enjoyed one of the biggest breakout seasons of any player in the nation.
The newest accolade earned by the Canberra, Australia, was in the worlds of SB Nation, "a no-brainer" when the outlet selected the senior forward as its Big West Player of the Year when it announced its list of preseason award winners and players to watch throughout the upcoming season.
Including his outstanding play throughout UC Davis' postseason -- he averaged a double-double of 12.0 points and 15.4 rebounds per game, and shot .473 overall throughout his team's historic five-game run -- Moneke, who majors in communication, finished his first season in Davis with 14 double-doubles, another league high.
UC Davis' 2017-18 season will begin on Nov. 13 at Northern Colorado -- the first of a season-opening five-game road swing that also includes another rivalry game vs, Sacramento State at the Golden 1 Center, the state-of-the-art downtown home of the Sacramento Kings. A home-and-home series against Northern Colorado will conclude on Nov. 29 when the Aggies compete inside the Pavilion for the first time this year.
